Graveyards in Varazze

Hi, my sister visited Varazze, Genoa this year looking for more information on our ancesters and when she went to the graveyards, there were only fairly modern headstones. She was unable to find out where records were kept. Is there anyone out there that could tell me where they are kept?

They are usually maintained inthe Uffico di Stato Civile in Varazze. Go to www.nonsolocap.it and put in the name on top and click Cerca and the following page click Varazze in for the website for the town and the website for Varazze in on the right side midway down, It is in Italian and I hope you can understand some if not all.

Hi Peter, thankyou for your help. I did what you said and put in the name and up came 'la ricerca di pisarello non ha prodotto risultat'. I don't speak Italian but I guessed it said that there were no results for that name. I then put in another four possible spellings and nothing came up.
Am I doing somethin wrong or is there another way I can go.

I do not understand where you put in the name Pisarello?? There should be a formletter to the Uffico di Stato Civile, in Italian requesting a deathcertificate and mail it to

You should put in her full name and date of death or year of death or approximate year of death and it might be wise to include a $5.00 in an enclosed envelope with your return address since the clerks research as an end of day duty and are poorlyt paid. Please keep me posted. =Peter=

Someone more knowledgeable is going to have to help me out on this one, but my understanding is that there is a very good reason why your sister found only "fairly modern headstones."

For the most part, Italian cemeteries are owned by the local church and burial plots are not sold, but rented!. The deceased's remains stay in the plot for a fixed number of years; beyond that, someone (presumably surviving family members) ponies up additional rent fees, or the remains are exumed and moved to a communal burial chamber/crypt containing the bones of hundreds or thousands of other souls.

Apparently, only the very wealthy amongst Italians can afford a "permanent" burial site as is traditional in, for example, the US.

Dear Tricia, if your sister found new tombstone, it means that the cemetery was renewed, and the old graveside don't exist anymore, and all the bones of different cuffins are in a common ossuary of the cemetery.
If you want to know about the records, you can request (knowing the name of your ancestor and date of death) contacting the guardian of the cemetery (who usually keeps the records at the entry of the cemetery)

this information you gave is wrong, the most italian cemetery belong to the municipality, the cemetery are run by the mayor of Town Hall

most of the plots have a rent of 19 or 99 years (like in Trapani) or 30 years (like in Florence), and they are renewable. Renting a plot in Trapani goes from 1000 euros to 5000 euros

Hi, Thanks for all that info guys, I am certainly learning by my mistakes.
I will take all your advice on what to do next.
I think one of my main problems will be that I lack exact dates and headstones would have helped.
