Italian citizenship risks

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Italian citizenship risks

Post by mexicocaribbean »

I'm sure this question may have been asked before, but I don't know the answer. Someone suggested to me that if I obtain dual citizenship for my children or grandchildren, especially boys then in the even of a war, as Italian citizens thay may be inducted into the military by Italy. Does anyone know if this is correct?
Also, are there any other potential risks or tax implications that may be unkowingly incurred by becoming an Italian citizen? I have always heard about the benefits of dual citizenship but have not seen any risks or pther potential problems addressed.

thanks

I would add to the thoughts I expressed in the thread Squiggy linked to above, that anyone who has or hopes to one day have acquired some degree of wealth should discuss dual citizenship with a competent attorney.

In particular, if you happen to die while on Italian soil, your heirs may find that Italian inheritance laws will override your US Last Will & Testament especially in regards to any property or moneys you may own in Italy.
