Seeking information on Augustus Tranello. Marinio Elenesa?

Post by jpetrelli »

I was hoping this forum could help me passed a roadblock I am having regarding my GGF Augustus Tranello.

What I know about Augustus is:
Born: May 1868
Died: September 8, 1954
Naturalized: March 19, 1900
Father: Angello
Mother: Anne Casselis (best guess from a poor quality document image).
First Wife: Mary UNKNOWN (Possibly DiPerno or Perina)
Second Wife: Giuseppina Aramini
Children: Five sons and one daughter.

His obituary says that he was a member of "Society Marinio Elenesa, a group of persons born in Marinio Elenesa, Italy".
-I can not identify Marinio Elenesa. Is it perhaps, Elena Marina, Taranta, Puglia, Italy?

He settled in Farmersville, NY and eventually in Rochester, NY.

I have identified one brother, Thomas, from NY Census documents. This line went by the line Tranella

I was hoping to investigate this family line back to Italy, but do not have any facts to narrow the search.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I noticed from your posted photos and documents on Ancestry that you have Augustus' Naturalization Certificate...

Do you also have his first papers? These will hold more information than the certificate, and should have the place of birth.

Using the # on the Nat. Certificate, you can request is papers from NARA for a $7.50 fee. Usually you will receive Declaration of Intent, Certificate of Arrival, and Petition to Naturalize.

If he had a Social Security #, you can also request his SS application.
This costs about $27, and should have his place of birth and his parents' names (including his mother's maiden name.)

No. I cannot find any definitive travel related documents for any confirmed Tranello relatives.
There are a few passenger lists with the name, which I believe is an uncommon surname, but I cannot tie these individuals back to my known relatives.

I will follow your suggestion.
FYI, I'm not certain I have kept my Ancestry tree up-to-date (they need better SYNCHRONIZING capabilities). I will upload current data now for you to review for any other suggestions/ideas.

Thank you for these suggestions for getting more information. I will look into these. I'm not sure where else to search for more clues.

Thanks again for the tips.

Still working on the "Marinio Elenesa" puzzle :-?

Meanwhile, here is a site for the comunes listed alphabetically...
I searched, but not sure... maybe something will "hit" you :-)
http://www.italyworldclub.com/8000_italian_communes/

Is the Society still functioning in Rochester? Is there someone you could contact? Or was it actually an "overseas" organization?

I would suggest you start another thread in the "Locations in Italy" forum (second one down on the forums page)

Post your question about what/where "Marinio Elenesa" might be :-)

Is this possibly a daughter?

Jim,

This is very interesting and definitely family. I just learned about this story this week when connecting and interviewing older family members (who unfortunately have not been able to provide additional, substantial family facts). They were not sure about the details or if it was even a fact.

My GGM married Augustus in 1914, so this must be a daughter from his first marriage. The interesting thing is that my GM, Augustus and Giuseppina's daughter and only child together, was named Ann.

I don't know how I missed this... I searched the Fulton website extensively. Thank you for uncovering this article. Please let me know if you have any tricks or tips that you used to find the article.

I'm afraid I haven't any tricks or tips. I simply searched the surname and spotted this article. I also saw a few articles about Thomas in the early 20's and some of the trouble he got himself into. I didn't see any genealogical value in those clippings though.
It sounds like you have been doing a pretty thorough research.
I have tried my resources, but can't find anything on that society. It probably doesn't exist today.
Good luck.

I typed the name of the society in Italian (Società Marinai Elenesi)
in a google search and this came up:

ANNO 1946
Verso la fine dell’anno della liberazione della nostra terra dal giogo nazifascista, i nostri concittadini residenti a Rochester ( New York ) riuniti e affratellati nel sodalizio “Società Marinai Elenesiâ€
