DiMattia

Post by rmccray »

I'm currently researching my family genealogy and have hit a roadblock. I'm researching the DiMattia family and I know some basic information from census records, but can only get so far due citizenship and name spelling variations. I'm sure that I'm not the first person to run into this, but maybe someone can help.

I know the my great grandfather Dominic DiMattia came to America in 1903-04. Dominic and the rest of the family show up on on the 1920 and 1930 census. Dominic's father Joe DiMattia is on the 1930 census.

It says on the 1930 census that Joe immigrated to American in 1884.

I've tried everything to find more information about Joe, but I have had no luck. I know his estimated time of birth is around 1850 and the he was not an American citizen at the time of the 1930 census.

I would love some help/suggestions about finding out more about him.

Thanks

Rob

Hello Rob, and welcome! :-)

Do you have the ship manifest for Dominic (probably Domenico) DiMattia?
Dominic's approx. DOB?
What is Dominic's wife's name? Do you know her maiden name?
Names of children?
Where in US did he settle (where was he on the 1920 and 1930 censuses?)

We'll see what we can do to help :-)

You've got to be careful with those prefixes:

1) The current Italian telephone directory ( http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... a&dv=&l=en ) lists 40 Dimattia's. 604 Di Mattia's (with a space after Di), and a whopping 2,172 Mattia's (no prefix).

2) Prefixes such as Di come and go, even in Italian documents. One of my grandfather's came from a line of Di's, but when he was born in Italy his birth certificate is missing the prefix. Curiously, his own two Italy-born daughters are one with the Di and one without. Later, when he became a naturalized US citizen, he used a De prefix (with a following space).
Carmine

Hi suanj! Great find :-D (what a misspelling!)

Rob,

Family tree on Ancestry.com for "Domenica(o) DiMattia" with spouse "Ida Accordo"...

Does that belong to you?

From Social Security Death Index...

Your Dominic?

Social Security Death Index
about Domenico Dimattia
Name: Domenico Dimattia
SSN: 439-66-6313
Last Residence: 70802 Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States of America
Born: 5 Mar 1886
Died: May 1967
State (Year) SSN issued: Louisiana (1962)

You can request Dominic's SS application which will include his place of birth in Italy...

http://genealogy.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi= ... t/main.jsp

With his place of birth, parents' names, and his Date of birth, you will then be able to write directly to the comune in Italy for his birth record. This will give information about his parents, including their age and place of birth, and occupation. If they were born in same comune, you can then request their birth and marriage records to follow the family back in time.

Form letters in Italian for writing to the comune...

The reference of "W/14/" is the page and line reference on the manifest...

Here is the manifest for Domenico. His last place of residence is actually Gibellina (Trapani, Sicily). It also looks like he is going to "father" Giuseppe in LaPlace, La. You take a look :-)

The ship sailed from Palermo.

Here is a POSSIBLE manifest for brother Giuseppe in 1903 from Casteldaccia, Palermo, to uncle in Louisiana...

Don't think the manifest for "brother" Giuseppe above is correct. Looks like he was going to "Father" Giuseppe...

Confirming a manifest for Giuseppe may be difficult because early manifests (you state that census puts Giuseppe arriving in 1884) hold very little information.

With a DOB of approx. 1864 (though the census states 1855) this manifest for 1894 may be a possibility for Giuseppe... April 1894 on SS Neckar

Should I change my search to Giuseppe rather than Joe with the same dates and information? I can see how they would say "Joe" rather the Giuseppe.

Thanks
