point me in the right direction ...Naples?

Post by carla370 »

I have gone as far as I can with my family history in Cosenza. The earliest I can find is a record on Francesco De Cicco b 8 Mar 1857, Spezzano Piccolo. His Parents were Domenico De Cicco and Michelina Grande. The family came here from elsewhere.

From here, my trail goes cold. There is a story in our family that the De Cicco family originally came from Naples. They were considered Nobility (although were peasants so the title was in name only)

I have had a lot of success with other family members using Archivio Di Stato Di Cosenza, it has been a very helpful site... but now that I must leave the Province for the Naples area I am once again lost.

I would appreciate some guidance:

(1)Does anyone know if there is a similar database for the Napoli region?

(2)Also, if anyone is familiar with ancestry.com I did find the name in "Memorie delle famiglie delle province meridionalit d'Italia" but I have no idea of the contents or meaning.

Many thanks

In case you were not aware, there are two sites for the Cosenza archives, an older one and the newer one. There are slight variations in the way data can be searched and displayed such that each site has its usefulness in certain conditions.

Old site: http://88.59.143.158/ascs_web/index.faces

New site: http://poster.beniculturali.it/poster/action.do

One of the great things about the new site is this: select Search by Place Name and enter Spezzano Piccolo. The results list will have just the one entry; click it. Now look just above for the "View people associated with this term" link and click it.

Considering the raw number of De Cicco entries at this region, I don't think you need to look as far as Napoli to find your ascendants.

Also, for what it is worth, in my own Cosneza ancesters, I have seen the prefix "de" come and go over the generations and also morph from "di" to "de" and back again.

Would you agree that this is most likely Michelina?
SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680841
Municipality of SPEZZANO PICCOLO. Volume number 1-PRE, document number 23 page -
Michelina Grande born on 19/04/1826

son/daughter of Salvadore Grande, bracciale and of Maria Felice L'Ammirata
HERE IS SOMETHING OF INTEREST>>>

I don't know if you realize this, but using the old site to search for Michelina Grande, after you click the view the record (the 1926 birth record, for example), look at the right side of the screen and click the "Citations" button for a complete list of all records which include the same name. On the second page of the list, you will see an entry for "Bride" dated 1844; hmmm... seems reasonable. Click Bride and you get this:
SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680841
Municipality of SPEZZANO PICCOLO. Volume number 1-PRE, document number 4 page -
Silvestro Domenico De Cicco, bracciale son of - - and of - -
Michelina Grande daughter of - - and of - -
married on 21/07/1844
So, it seems that Domenico's full name may have been Silvestro Domenico De Cicco! Clicking Silvestro leads to a birth record:
SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680768
Municipality of MAGLI. Volume number 11, document number 69 page -
Silvestro Domenico De Cicco born on 04/08/1819

son/daughter of Antonio De Cicco, bracciale, 36 years and of Fortunata Mancuso, filatrice, 36 years
Looks good to me!

I do not see a place named "Magli" in modern Italy; the nearest (spelling) I can find is Comune di Maglie, Provincia di Lecce, Regione di Puglia, which is quite some distance from Spezzano Piccolo: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... 8&dirflg=d

Wait, never mind that. How about Frazione Magli, Comune di Trenta, Provincia di Cosenza, Regione di Calabria?

That is much, much, better - just 4km from Spezzano Piccolo: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... 1&t=h&z=13

Sadly, the twins died soon after birth:
SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680768
Municipality of MAGLI. Volume number 9, document number 13 page -
Gennaro Palmo De Cicco dead on 18/03/1818 at the age of 44 days (should be 4 days - Carmine)
born in -
son/daughter of Antonio De Cicco and of Fortunata Mancuso
SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680768
Municipality of MAGLI. Volume number 9, document number 14 page -
Giuseppina Palma De Cicco dead on 18/03/1818 at the age of 4 days
born in -
son/daughter of Antonio De Cicco and of Fortunata Mancuso

There was a Gennaro born much earlier; he died in 1817 at age 16. In his honor, the male twin was given the same name just one year later:
SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680768
Municipality of MAGLI. Volume number 8, document number 18 page -
Gennaro De Cicco, coltivatore di campagna dead on 08/03/1817 at the age of 16 years
born in -
son/daughter of Antonio De Cicco and of Fortunata Mancuso
If all of these dates are correct, Antonio and Fortunata were married around 1800, had Gennaro in 1801'ish and then no more children until 1810 when Maria was born. It is also possible that some records are missing...

Carmine thank you for your work; I am still looking at Spezzano Piccolo recordings.

Domenico and Michelina had several children, most of them were girls.

Fortunata #1 1846
Vincenza #2 1848
Rachele 1851
Maria 1853
Fortunata #2 1855
Francesco (my great grandfather) 1857
Vincenza #2 1859
Concetta 1876

IF I cannot find Domenico's Birth Recording in the Naples area, I may have to see about his Death record in Spezzano Piccolo, which may reveal his city of birth. I have looked at the LDS Films 1901-1910 and he is not there so he may have passed between Concetta's birth of 1876 and 1901. Those films have been back-ordered, and there is no telling when they may arrive

I have yet to branch in to great great aunts and great great uncles, and cousins. Right now I am trying to establish the blood line and thus my quest would be to follow Domenico. There are 52 listings in Cosenza however I am still not sure he was from the Province.

Thanks

Carla, You missed it above. Domenico's full birth name was Silvestro Domenico De Cicco. He was born August 4, 1819 in Magli, just 4 kilometers from Spezzano Piccolo.
