Former Austro-Hungarian Territory

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Former Austro-Hungarian Territory

Post by Michael P »

My grandparents were born in Carisolo under Austria-Hungary. Carisolo and all of Trentino became Italian on 16 July 1920. My grandfather emigrated to the U.S. in March 1921.

I have been working with the Italian Consulate of San Francisco to obtain Italian citizenship jure sanguinis. I was just informed by the consulate that since my grandfather was born under Austria-Hungary, the deadline for me to submit my application has expired.

As I read Italian Law 379, the deadline for application applies to former residents of Austria-Hungary that emigrated abroad prior to 16 July 1920.

Does anyone have any experience / expertise in this area?
