Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.
I am trying to find information about my great grandparents on both sides of my parents. They arrived to the U.S. in the early 1900's.
What makes this difficult is all I have is there names from the census of 1920. I believe their names were different in Italy. I am also trying to find the ship they arrived on.
Any suggestions where to start? I tried the liberty ellis island website but no luck.
I know they left Italy and arrived in New York but don't know what port.
The research I have said they arrived in 1902 but there is no such information or ship to back it up.
On my fathers side, I am trying to find their italian last name because they changed it to Shano probably before boarding or on arrival in NY. Also looking for Concitta's maiden name:
Biaso Shano born in italy
Concitta or Concetta Shano born in italy
Joseph Shano born in italy
On my mothers side:
Micheal or Michael Claro, born in italy
Louisa Claro born in italy, naples?
Adeline Claro born in the bronx
Gloria Claro born in the bronx

Here is the image of the record Marty posted
It is a naturalization record for Joseph Shano, who was born in Sept 1898 in St. Agata Italy.
He states that he arrived in 1902 on the ship "Archimel"
Correct, this is a good find. I also uploaded several documents with my question that were given to me that started the whole mystery for us with many unanswered questions:
There is no such vessel Archimal
I cannot find marriage or death information on any of them
Can you assist with our mystery please? Thank you so much!

Can you assist with our mystery please? Thank you so much!
Edit to add:
Here is the WWI Registration Card for Joseph SCIANO- same address at E. 103rd St., NYC
Date of birth 9 Sept 1897.
I have checked the births in Sant'Agata di Militello in years 1895, 1896, and 1898 for him because the 1897 are missing. Did not find him.
Using the name Biagio Sciano in Sant'Agata... I located a marriage.... but the bride's name is Giuseppa Gaglione ...
Okay, I found the Archimede on the liberty website and looks like I have to view each page and name. The date is wrong on the naturalization form so this is a difficult task.
They were married when they came over.
Is there a death certificate website that you use?
Thank you
According to the 1920 Census... Biagio (the correct spelling) came in 1898 and Concetta and Joseph (Giuseppe) came in 1900.
Concetta would have traveled under her MAIDEN name, and Giuseppe under his father's surname... HOWEVER, sometimes when a child is listed under the mother they "ditto" her surname...
Makes it difficult, but at least you have the ship and possible date of arrival.

NOTE: see addition to the other post.
ALSO - What are the dates of death you are searching?
Found these possibilities (using sounds-like) in the NYC Death Index
Schiano Concetta 48 y Aug 7 1920 22905 Manhattan
Scoma Concetta 67 y Nov 30 1922 21421 Kings
Seina Concetta 76 y Sep 7 1938 17535 Kings
Siano Concetta 64 y Feb 11 1939 3864 Kings
I think your Biaso Shano is Biagio Sciano

Boy, this is really something. Interesting stuff and very confusing with all the name changes and the different last names even though they were married. Was it common to get remarried in the states even if you were married in Italy?
I am going to have to make a family tree to capture what you all found so far and then hope we can continue this.
The name Italia, probably a Graecized form of Italic Vitelia (='calf land'), was originally restricted to the southern half of the 'toe' but was gradually extended. By 450 B.C. It meant the region subsequently inhabited by the Bruttii; by 400 it embraced Lucania as well. Campania was included after ...
