Origins of Morana family from Palermo, Sicily

Post by ecanali »

I have traced my Morana lineage to Palermo, Sicily abt. 1730, and I am interested in obtaining any other information about their origins and ancestry. I have been told that Morana is not a native Sicilian name, but may be of Spanish origin around 1700, possibly Moran; however, I have not uncovered any information to support or refute this statement.

Around 1800, the family settled and remained in Santa Croce Camerina, Ragusa, Sicily.

Carmelo Morana married Antonia Occhipinti in Palermo in 1720’s or 1730’s.
• Son: Giovanni Morana married Antonia Nicastro and had a son Carmelo Morana.
• Son: Filippo Morana (b. 1755) married Gaetana Giovanna Arrabito. Filippo & Gaetana's children:
? Guglielmo Morana (1781)
? Giuseppa Morana married Gaetano Agnello
? Giovanna Maria Morana
? Nunzio Morana (1798 - 1848) married Giuseppa Riera; they died in Santa Croce Camerina, Ragusa but uncertain whether they were born there or in Palermo. Their children and descendants lived in Santa Croce Camerina:
• Orazio Morana (1819 – 1844)
• Gaetano Carmelo Morana (1821 – 1899) married Giovanni Mania; 5 children
• Giovanna Morana married Paolo Pernice
• Emanuele Morana (1826 – 1918) married Concetta Agnello. Their children were:
o Orazio (1854 – 1904)
o Giuseppa Rosalia (1861 – 1933) married Gaetano Iuculano
o Giovanni ( 1864 – 1935)
o Nunzio (1851 – 1915) married Carmela Caruso – 11 children including my grandfather Emanuele Morana (1900 – 1974).

Any information on the Morana ancestry and especially the origins of the Morana family would be greatly appreciated.

I am also interested in Morana family.

My grandmother was MORANA Giovanna o Giovannina born in Vittoria (Ragusa) on June 4th, 1887 (1886?). The father was Pietro and the mother NICOSIA Rosa.

When she was 15, she married STORIALE(S) Salvatore, on November 5th, 1902. Storiale was 18, born in Genova and resident in Milano.

Around the 1920, she escaped with my grandfather SECCHI Giuseppe and they went in Rome. They got never married and had two sons. She died in Rome on August 15, 1932.

Oscar,

I do not have any information on your grandmother and her family. I have not been able to link them with any of my Morana relatives at this time.

As with most surnames, there are many "branches" to the Morana name. I have 34 on my Tree and this family "branch" originated from Bagheria which is now part of the city of Palermo. There are no matches that I saw from the other names listed. When members of the Morana family on my tree emigrated to America, Ellis Island mis-recorded them as Morano. Some went with the spelling errors and kept Morano as their new legal name while others kept their Morana original name. I currently have 31 Morano's on my tree. The oldest Morana on my tree is Vincenzo Morana who married Anna Maria traci. they had a son Pietro Morana (1768-1831) who married Giuseppa Balistreri and had to boys and two girls between 1806-1814. Francesco Morana (1806-?) married Antonina Blanda - no known children and also Rosaria Gagliardo (1808- 1852) and they had 9 known children with son Vincenzo Morana (1839 - 1911) married to Caterina Galioto (1848 - 1899) on 20 September 1868 being the major link to American Morana's and Morano's (they had 10 known children).
