Piazza family from Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicily

Post by tlombardo »

My great-grandmother, Vincenza Piazza, came to the US on March 12, 1909 on the Principe di Piemonte. She was married to Guiseppe Sabella who came over before her. I found the manifest record on http://www.EllisIsland.org (sorry, I tried to post it here but couldn't get the image to show up). She came over with four of her children and several other family members who were all listed on the same page. The oldest child, Brigida, had lost her arm, and there is a notation about it on the manifest (on the second page), but I can't make out the whole thing. Can someone please take a look and see if you can decipher the handwriting? Looks like it says, "loss left arm which ....affects ability......" I can't make out the rest.

Also, I believe I found Vincenza's birth record in Sciacca, August 13, 1873. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 486-398-33 Trying to determine her parents' names, but I'm having trouble picking them out of the document. Mother should be Calogera Ciulla.

Ok, I'll try this again. This should be the link for the first page of the manifest: http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipM ... 0267%2ETIF

This should be the second page: http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipM ... 1537030135

Thanks for reading that birth record. I wasn't sure the date was right because I couldn't find August mentioned, but I did see the thirteenth, so I thought it might be right. I'll keep looking.

As far as the children, I know the oldest two were born in Sicily, but the rest were born in the US. She apparently went back and forth several times before the last trip in 1909. I know the daughter stayed in Sicily and lived with the grandmother until this time. In fact, on the manifest, it does indicate that the two youngest children are "US born".

Thank you for finding Bridget's birth record! She has been of particular interest to me...she was my grandmother's sister and lost her arm as a child in a trolley accident in NY. She then went on to become a typist (with one arm) but died at age 37 from kidney failure.

Guiseppe had two brothers that I know of...Antonino (wife Maria Rotolo) and Lorenzo (wife Accursio Imbornone...I think that's what the last name says). Both women were on the ship with Vincenza Sabella.

I've been looking for Guiseppe and Vincenza's marriage record as well. I was told they married the year before Bridget was born. I'm also still trying to find Vincenza's birth record as I'm not sure of her father's name. I'll keep searching...hopefully it'll turn up.

Thank you. I just wasn't sure about this record, but it can't be my ancestor.

Yes! This is definitely him! I had his parents as Antonio Sabella and Bridget Marinelli with a date of birth as 15 April 1872 (date was from his grave marker). And yes, this family is stuck on naming patterns. There have been huge fights over this as the grandchildren deviated from the tradition!

Thank you for locating this record, Marty. I searched for hours last night for Guiseppe and Vincenza's birth records and came up empty.

Hello. I am new to this site. was just googling my grandfather Antonio Piazza from Sciacca. He married Ninfa Caracappa. Her brother was Fileppe Caracappa. I have been to Sciacca many times although not for some years now. But I am planning a trip in September and would love to meet any relatives. I did meet Giovanni and Nicola Piazza, grandsons of my grandfathers brother.
