Master List 1 of Free Websites for Italian Research

Post by rp76226 »

I'm occasionally amazed at the types of websites or URLs out there that I find by reading posts on this site. Today, a website was given, on a recent post, to find Italians who died in the military through a name search. Once in a while, there's a URL where people have researched records for a specific town. Is there a master list of the Italian websites out there that can help find genealogical data? I don't think there is a master list. So let's start one now. Here's some that I know about - please reply and add the ones that you know about (URL - followed by a brief description): note - I can only post 9 URLS and I have 23 - so this is the first of three posts.

https://familysearch.org/search - Mormon site that is really helpful (don't worry, they won't try to convert you)

http://www.difesa.it/Il_Ministro/Caduti ... odOro.aspx - Italian Military Death Records

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... o+di+Bari/ Province of Bari, Italy from 1809.

http://www.polizzigenealogy.com/ - Polizzi Generosa, Palermo, Sicily

https://familysearch.org/search/collect ... Id=1927178 - Huge database of Italian digitalized records from the Mormons.

http://www.grecicousins.com/1.html - Greci, Avellino - by far, the best records site of any one commune that I have ever seen.

http://en.comuni-italiani.it/index.html - Contacts for Italian communes and cities.

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/?q=gallery - State archives for some Italian Regions

http://www.avitrees.com/welcome.jsp - Common Italian surnames by region.

https://translate.google.com/ - Google Translate (for those of us that don't know the language).

http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html - Searching Ellis Island in interactive manner.

http://stevemorse.org/ellis/cg.html - Searching Castle Garden in interactive manner.

http://www.stevemorse.org/ - searching other immigration records - but only a few are free.

https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Italy_Handwriting - Italian handwriting examples to help decipher some really difficult to read civil record handwriting.

http://www.italiangen.org/ - NYC records of both Italians and non-Italians.

http://web.tiscali.it/liviomoreno/FamilySearch.xls - links to many Italian church and civil records.

here are the rest that I have. hoping to see others added to this list:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ - a sister site of ancestry where you can search by name.

http://persi.heritagequestonline.com/hq ... y/do/login - you have to go to your local library for initial access to this (if they subscribe to it), but it is usually free and has most of the census records from the US.

http://www.polizzigenerosaisnellogeneal ... gspot.com/ - Polizzi Generosa and Isnello

http://1940census.archives.gov/index.asp - 1940 Census

http://postimage.org/ - the URL you need to utilize to post a link to one of your documents that you want others to see for one of your own posts on ItalianGenealogy.com

There are so many websites that were around and swallowed up by the$$$$ hounds making them now unavailable to us who feel that assisting people find their roots is more holy and virtuous than commercial profit drooling types. However I have many of those printed out but put away and can be researched if they haven't been closed off to us good guys at the pass. However by dint of research and hard work the results can be amazing. The heraldry portion of italian research is a back door as well as the antiquarian book dealers in Italy whose catalogues have a fountain of information by province and commune of books written in a particular commune or province containing sources of information that may be lacking etc etc etc...adding these to your lists are only of interest to researchers like us and will be thrown away when we die unless there is someone who would like to acquire files upon files....interested (free of course)?

Peter, that was my intent - to start a list of websites and have others add to the list. So do you have websites to add?

Yes but some of my reference works are no longer available on the internet or parts I managed to retain before removal while I do have others from Beyond Italy as well. Of course I have others that are Italy oriented in more esoteric sectors of genealogy. Peter

I think that recirculating these lists of free, helpful URLs will help many people in their search for their ancestors. It took me years to compile this list. Hopefully it will help some more of you who read this. I would like to see the owners of this website take this list of free URLs and other relevant free URLs and make it a permanent link on the top of their website with other listed topics or possibly include it with one of the existing topics already there.

Marty, that test to speech link is amusing, but does it serve a genealogical purpose? Also, can a text be sent to anyone or just heard by the creator?

Te text to speech is interesting and useful as it MAY explain why a surname is pronounced differently and therefore spelled differently after your ancestors came to America.
