Joseph Cagliumi

Post by ltramposch97 »

Born Pietro Gisueppe 3 Apr 1890 in Fonzaso, Belluno, Veneto, Italy to Luigi Lira di Giovanni of Fonzaso, and Terenzio Cagliumi di Giuseppe who was born in Rio Saliceto and llived in Carpi Modena.

Pietro immigrated to America on 29 Nov 1909, destination Sopris, Colorado where his mother's sister Libera Lira and her husband Antonio (also Lira) lived.

Very little is known about him beyond this, except that he lived somewhere in Pennsylvania and is buried next to his mother in Trinidad Catholic cemetery in Colorado. No census records, draft or naturalization records seem to exist. The year of death on his tombstone is 1969. It is thought that he may have been married but had no children and lived in an institution in Western Pennsylvania later in his life.

He had one sister Antonia Cagliumi Lira (1892-1985) who arrived in the US on 22 Feb 1921 following her marriage in Italy to Abramo Lira (1887-1958). They settled in Beadling, Alllegheny, PA.

Their mother Luigia Lira Cagliumi (1869-1965) arrived in the US on 4 Mar 1937, her intial destination was Beadling, PA to visit her daughter Antonia but shortly thereafter she boarded a train for Sopris, Colorado here her sister Libera lived and lived out the rest of her live there.

Nothing is known about the father Terenzio except that he was born on 9 Jul1866 in Rio Saliceto, Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna, Italy to Giuseppe Cagliumi 1834 – 1869 and Blanda Saltini who were both born in San Marino excpet that he was mention in the book Clinica medica italiana, Volume 54, c 1915, as a participant in a liver study in a hospital in Genoa as a patient with hepatitis so presumably he died in Italy. Terenzio had one known sister Teresa who was born in Carpi on 2 Mar 1868 who married Carlo Leonardi in Modena in 1901. It does not appear that they lived in the US. And a search for the surname does not turn up any other families int he US, it appears to be a rare surname.

Both Terenzio and Luigia were literate, and Luigia's surnames were spelled correctly on her green card, so I assume that Jospeh/Pietro Giuseppe knew how to spell his surname. Knowing that immigrants had accents and that census takers were not the best spellers, I've tried every variation I could think of to turn up US records for Joe Cagliumi. I am aware that the gl make the sound of io in onion. So approximate would sound like Ca yoo mee. I have contacted the cemetery in CO, but apparently CO is very strict with record privacy and I got no repsonse to my request for information.I have no idea what else to do or where to look. Any thoughts?

Yes, these are the same records that I found, but nothing in the US other than the ship manifest from his arrival in 1909. He is buried in Colorado and the year on his grave is 1969. You would think having lived in the US for 60 years there would be some trace of him.

Laura thankyou. These are good finds. It also explains why I couldn't find the 1920 census for the Lira famiy, search turned up Laira, Lero, but not Luna. This is also interesting since my grandmother, his sister Antonia Cagliumi Lira arrived in the US in Feb 1921. This may explain his eventual move to PA, where she and her husband Abramo settled. He appears to have been a miner like many other Northern Italian Immigrants and my Grandfather Abramo was a miner as well. We do know that Joseph was in a hospital in Western PA in 1960. So only 40 years more to account for. Very grateful for the progress.

Joseph is buried in Colorado next to his mother. It is believed that he did not die there however but that his mother Luigia purchased both graves.http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cg ... 433&df=all& It may be that he didn't have a spouse or children to bury him. We do know that he was living in Pennsylvania in 1960, which is 9 years before he died and that the family still living in Colorado knew his mother Luigia well, but never met Joseph which seems to bear this out. I also have the obituary for Luigia who died in in 1965 (4 years before Joseph). The obituary mentions my grandmother (his sister) Antonia, but not Joseph who was still living. It also mentions her sister Libera's children. This also appears to bear out that Joseph was not living in Colorado at the time. As you can see the name was misspelled on both http://postimg.org/image/wcnmmgj6t/

I now have Joseph's date of death and locaton. I was correct in thinking that he died in Pennsylvania. The date was 9 Jan 1969. Thanks to Laura, I know he was living with his Aunt and Uncle in Colorado in 1920. And thanks to my Aunt I know he was living in PA in 1960. So I just have 40 years to account for which is better than the 60 I started with. I still don't know where in Pennsylvania, if I did perhaps I could find the 1930 and 1940 census records. The name was mispelled almost without exception so its hit or miss........
