Looking to start genealogy on my Grandmother's family (Caputo ). The family of Felix ( or Phillipe ? ) and Mary Louise Coilia ( sp ? ) came to America in 1908 from Campagna, Italy. Eight children - Tony, Minnie, Rose, Cecilia, Angelina, Victoria, Libretta, and James. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Grazie !
wanting to start Italian geneology
Re: wanting to start Italian geneology
First thing you will need for your searching is their real name. I guarantee no one born in Campania is named Felix, Phillipe, or Mary Louise.
Information that if you can get will help:
Where in Campania? Or are you saying the actual village is named Campagna (in which case it is likely Campagna in the province of Salerno). Village name would help a lot.
How old were they when they died (or are they)? or better yet, their dates of birth?
Caputo is a VERY VERY common name making searching through immigration records less reliable (don't want to trace the wrong person after all) unless Felix came with Mary Louise.
Also how would you pronounce "Coilia" according to your sources, because that is not a name. But if you say how you pronounce it we may be able to piece it together, maybe even narrow it down to a part of Campania to begin searching in.
In terms of their first name, my guess would be Felice and Maria Luisa, but they could also be Filippo, Maria Lucia or Maria Luigia. Or it could be that those were based on their middle names, or even names that they simply adopted when they cam here (less likely but possible).
Any more information? About where they came from in Italy perhaps? Where they settled?

TIP: When asking for records from Italy, do NOT ask for an "estratto." ALWAYS ask for a "copia integrale." A photocopy of the original Act will contain more information

Re: wanting to start Italian geneology
I have Caputo's in my family from Taurasi, Avellino, Campania, Italy going back to the mid 1700s - if you end up tracing the family to Taurasi, I'm sure we can make a connection. Feel free to email me at anthony.sacco13@gmail.com if you have any luck!
