Military Records

Post by February »

Could someone kindly tell me how to apply for military records for someone born in Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino? Was serving in the military required?

Thank you for any help.

In order to answer that we would need to know a birth year.
TIP: When asking for records from Italy, do NOT ask for an "estratto." ALWAYS ask for a "copia integrale." A photocopy of the original Act will contain more information

Thank you for responding.

I'm looking for two records: 1874 and 1902.

It's the same name - Carmine Ferraioli - a generation apart. Are these records online?

Thank you for your help!

I found this one in enrollment lists of Salerno province:

Ferrajoli
Nome: Carmine, Salvatore
Classe: 1874
Comune di nascita: Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino
Full text:
Ferrajoli Carmine, Salvatore di Antonio e Nocera Carolina nato il 08/10/1874 a Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino di professione Contadino

Ferraioli, with its variations, is a very popular surname in Sant'Egidio.
You can find such lists online at

http://www.archiviodistatosalerno.benic ... te-di-leva

Notice that you can choose the Commune in a drop-down menu, and there are several different spellings for Sant'Egidio

Thank you for that link - I was able to find him. I went through all the alternate spellings of the name Ferraioli. It had been misspelled with a "j" instead of an "i".

Would the 1902 military records be available by mail or is 1895 the last date covered?

Are any other records (birth, marriage, etc.) for Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino be available online?

Thank you for your kind help.

Ferrajoli might not be a misspelling. There are still some Ferrajoli's in Sant'Egidio area today (I'm from near there). It is indeed possible that people originated from the same ancestor have surnames Ferrajoli, Ferraioli, or Ferraiolo, as a consequence of transcription errors.
According to the site of Salerno AdS, they hope to put online enrollment lists up to 1900 by the end of 2015. As far as I know, there are no other records online, but you can write to the AdS to get some, if you have exact dates.

Pippo, my apologies, I didn't see your first post until this morning. When I was notified that there was a response, I clicked on the link to see the last post and noticed only adelfio's answer. Thank you for taking the time to find Carmine - that is indeed him. If I had been more careful in checking the messages, it would have saved me some time.

The transcription error is in this record - I am sure the name is Ferraioli. I do have dates but need a sample request letter and address.

Thank you again for your help.

Thank you. I have already sent requests to Sant'Egidio for birth records with mixed results. I got a response for Carmine (1874), but not for the younger Carmine. I think the failure of the second request was my fault - I didn't give enough identifying information. So, I thought the military records might give me the information on the younger Carmine that I needed.

I would be grateful for a sample request letter and address of the agency that handles military records.
