Looking for birth records for grandparents from Cefalu

Post by VotM »

I'm looking for birth records for two grandparents, both born in Cefalu. Having been through the Cefalu birth records on FamilySearch several times with no success, I'm hoping a second set of eyes or a fresh perspective (or access to different data sets) will lead to better results.

First up is Giuseppe Papa, who was born sometime in either 1879 (no data on FamilySearch), 1880, or 1881. His father may be listed as either Vincenzo Papa or Felice Esposito inteso Vincenzo Papa or some variant thereof (his siblings were under three different permutations of these names); his mother may be listed as Marianna Carnaggio or Maria Carnaggio.

Second is Giuseppa DiFina, born either in 1900 or 1901. Her father's name is Domenico DiFina; her mother's first name is listed on the 1910 U.S. census record as "Augustina", so I suspect her first name should appear as Agostina. I do not have a last name for her.

Any help anyone out there can give would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks. I had ruled that entry out because his sister Santa was born on May 24 of the same year, and the index runs up to at least 417. But I suppose it's a remote possibility.

Many thanks for that lead! That addresses the real reason behind my question; namely, to find Agostina's surname.

Funny thing is, I looked for the Di Fina passenger records some time back. Unfortunately, I used the Ellis island search engine directly. The one on FamilySearch applies the search parameters more leniantly; e.g., it is much more forgiving about whether a space is present between "Di" and "Fina", or whether the "Di" is present at all.

OK, I'm getting greedy now...

If there's anyone who has access to a Termini marriage index who can tell me the year in which Domenico Di Fina and Agostina Catanzaro were married (if they were married there at all), I'd greatly appreciate it. They were married sometime between 1896 and the end of 1905.

At the moment I'm checking the Termini allegati; it's a slow process. I was able to find Domenico's brother's marriage (Salvatore Di Fina) in the allegati for 1896, but so far I've reached 1899 and still have had no luck finding Domenico. Thanks in advance!

Turns out I needed a lesson in place names. The Termini birth, marriage, etc. records I was looking for were filed under Villaurea.

Found it in the LDS Villaurea/Termini records... and a few others further back along the chain as well. Thanks!

If the info above came from the Termini Imerese database, it looks like there was at least one hiccup in transition. The names should read "Agostina Catanzaro, Giovanni Catanzaro, Maria Balsamo". See entry 30 on the link below.

I'm guessing that's "Di Fina, Domenico; Di Fina, Carmelo; Citrano, Giuseppa".

So far the LDS records have allowed me to push the line back to a prior set of Carmelo & Domenico Di Fina's; can't find when the first Carmelo was born, but his son Domenico was born around 1799. I've also pushed the other lines in Cefalu and Termini leading to Domenico Di Fina and Agostina Catenzaro back as far as the LDS records (and the foundling wheel) allow.

Thank goodness for those Allegati marriage records!
