Vito Torrisi search

Post by Torrisi_aus »

My grandfathers name was Vito Torrisi born 8th April 1899 born in Gairre, Catania Italy. He emigrated to Australia in 1926. We have a few details from Australian records but nothing from his time in Italy or his military involvement. Paperwork we have indicated he served from 1917-1920. I am trying to find any information as my father and his sister have little to information about their father.

If you can help point me in the right direction that would be amazing

Hello Vicky!
Welcome to the forum :-)

There are records for Giarre, Catania, available online at the free site, familysearch.org
I have checked the birth indexes for years 1898-1900 and do not find a Vito Torrisi.
The only male birth with the surname Torrisi was on 10 February 1899. The child was named Salvatore, born to Pietro Torrisi, 36, laborer and to his wife, Angela Di Bella.

Can you tell me the name of his sister? If her birth record can be located it will give us the names of their parents. Then I can go back to the Torrisi births I did find in those years to see if Vito was recorded with a different given name...

EDIT TO ADD:
Is this your grandfather? Can you tell us if he was married in Italy?

Hi Tessa,
His Sister's name was Concetta Torrisi and she married Vito Musumeci.
Yes this is my Grandfather, he (Vito) married Saenta Torrisi (we think the spelling of this may be wrong as we knew her as Sanita). He also had a younger brother Salvatore. The records we have from Australian National Archives gives us a few details but nothing previous to his immigration to Australia in 1926. His paper work says he was in the Italian Military from 1917-1920.

Let me know if there is anything else I can try to give you.

Hi, I replied your pm.
Riccardo is a my good friend....
your ancestor was born no in Giarre town but in a suburb of Giarre: Macchia di Giarre... he married Santa Caltabiano ( born in Sant'Alfio di Giarre, other Giarre's suburb) on 22 jul 1922 #23.

Feeling completely overwhelmed. Thankyou Thankyou.
My aunty (vito's daughter) did say he was born in Macchia, but records we found said Giarre. Guess its a lesson that records aren't always right.

Were you able to see anything about his Military involvement? records here when he was Inturned in Aus say he served fro 46 months from 1917-1920??

Thankyou!!

Macchia is a Giarre's hamlet..
a hamlet is no a town but just a part of a town, far from the city.
So Giarre birthplace is correct and all civil certificates must be request in Giarre, but Macchia hamlet specifically, just for let understand that hewas born in a hamlet of Giarre outskirts...
