Why was this death record amended?

Post by carubia »

Here is a death record for Matteo Garamella from 1895 that was amended by court order in 1913. The original record says that Matteo was 7 years 3 months old at the time of his death (30 July 1895), but the amendment changed this to 6 months, 7 days, which was correct (he was born on 23 Jan 1895).

Here is a copy of the Part II entry from Feb 1913 that describes this amendment:

What I'm wondering is, why was this death record corrected at that time? The child was only 6 months old when he died. Who would even have had reason to look at this record so many years later? I don't see an explanation in either record, but then it's hard to make out what much of the 1913 record says. I'm wondering if perhaps this had something to do with the fact that he would've been 18 in Jan 1913 and so would've been required to begin military service. Does anyone else have an opinion on this?
