Giuseppe Bartoli, New York contractor

Post by joetucciarone »

Does anyone have any information on Giuseppe Bartoli (Bertoli or Brotali)? According to a May 19, 1882 newspaper article, "nearly all Italian immigrants come to New York on consignment to Giusepp Brotali, an Italian money lender. He advances passage money, $18, and they come subject to his orders." That same month, another article reported that Italians "are being imported by thousands by Giuseppo Brotali, who keeps a labor bureau in Baxter Street."

I found a listing for him in the Manhattan Corporate Directory 1904. That is all I can find.

I just did a Proquest search of historic NY Times articles and I only found one items. It was a property transfer 414 East 11th Street from Biagio Bartoli to Giuseppe Bartoli 25 East 86 Street for mtg $7000. I doubt this is your person. The other spelling did not yield anything.

Thank you for letting me know about that. Is Proquest a subscription service? I haven't found the NY Times on a no-charge archive.

I found a Giuseppe Bartoli on Trow's 1904 Copartnership and Corporate Directory for New York City. He was at 219 E. 23rd Street with Martino Martinelli and Vergilio Baldera. Unfortunately, their occupations weren't listed.

I did find the article in several other 1882 newspapers. In one, the Italian vice-consul, M. C. Marefoschi, was asked about him. Mr. Marefoschi said he didn't know of Giuseppe or his business. He did give an interesting account of the reasons Italians chose to emigrate here and blamed agents of the Anchor Line for misrepresenting conditions in the U.S. "They represent to the simple countrymen that the streets of New York are filled with gold."

from what I read,
for Mr A. Bini decesead and buried, uncle of Giuseppe Bartoli, it was ordered a statue for the Bini grave, sold from Pietro Rattazzi, and bought from Giuseppe Bartoli, but with money collected from Teobaldo Rossi( he asked money to Italians friends of Bini, to place a statue on his grave), well the statue was a real piece of crap, and the italians in Barre that given the money, asked explanations, why the money was spent for a so orrible statue..
and the italians asked to Teobaldo Rossi of to give back the orrible statue to Pietro Rattazzi.... but Teobaldo Rossi no replied, and just said that the responsability was of Rattazzi and Bartoli..

Hi Suanj and FF,

Thank you both for your help. It is possible that the Giuseppe Brotali I found ("Brotali" was the newspaper spelling) was the same man as the Giuseppe Bartoli you found. Maybe the 1882 newspaper articles were a sign that his immigration/consignment business had come under government scrutiny. Maybe, if he was forced to close that business, he started another as a dealer in marble products, as you have found.

About Giuseppe Brotali, I found about 12 articles on the Library of Congress site (free) and about 10 different articles on the GenealogyBank.com site (subscription). May 18, 1882: "The New York correspondent of the Philadelphia Ledger explains how it is that so many Italians come here with no money. An intelligent Italian said to the former: 'Most of us have come to New York on consignment to Giuseppo Brotali, an Italian capitalist; he advances our passage money, $18, and we come subject to his orders. We sign papers both in Italy and here, stating that each of us is willing to pay $5 a month for twelve consecutive months to Brotali, in consideration of his having advanced the necessary funds to bring us to America. We are ignorant in the ways of this country and Brotali is a man of large information . . .'"

Hi Suanj,

I agree, and if Giuseppe Brotali had grown wealthy from his immigration/consignment trade by 1882, he must have been in the U.S. before that time. His business may have required him to travel back and forth to Italy, so he may appear in several ship manifests.

Hi Suanj,

Thank you very much for finding another record. Unfortunately, I think you are right - we cannot know the correct spelling of Giuseppe's last name.
