Gandinos from Napoli

Post by amarino81 »

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of a site to search birth records in Napoli? I am trying to track my G-grandfather back to his town.
The facts I know are:
James (Giuseppe) Gandino (sometimes noted as Gardino)
Born 8 Mar 1871 in Napoli
Came to the US around 1884 and moved to Williamsburg/Greenpoint Brooklyn
Naturalized 23 May 1921
Married Rosa and had a bunch of kids (Madeline/Maddalana = my grandmother).

Naturalization docs: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse. ... sePUB=true

1910 census: http://interactive.ancestry.com/7884/44 ... 0434/facts

Any help is appreciated. I am also looking to locate his immigration ship manifest.

Thanks!

Both Gandino and Gaudino can be found in Naples today. Gaudino is more numerous.
Naples is divided into 12 sections and the records are filed by section. Not all sections are on line. Those that are can be found at http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/en
You really need to locate the ship manifest. If the folks here can't find it try lostquays@ymail.com. She can find anything!
You might also want to be aware that many Italians called Vincenzo ended up being known as James in America.
If he married Rosa in America then look for his Catholic marriage record. It should provide the parish of baptism which will help you locate the section of Naples where he was born.

Thank you for the help. Their ages look a couple of yrs off and I think they might have been married in Brooklyn. Do you know if the info you pulled matches this record?

the certificate number is the same; by another website, the surname transcription is Gaudino, but surely it is the same person of my previous post...
Gaudino James Nov 10 1894 15121 (1894) Manhattan 1493126 Alba, Rosina
http://www.stevemorse.org/vital/nymarri ... ndex=groom
abt Brooklyn or Manhattan, marriage place, I don't know why this discrepance, but name of groom and name of bride is ok...
Gandino, James Spouse : Unknown
Date/Year of Marriage : 1894
Location : Brooklyn
County : Kings
* Certificate Number : 15121

http://bklyn-genealogy-info.stevemorse. ... G/G.2.html

abt the age.. I believe that James declared 1870 as birthyear, maybe for some reason...
no doubt that the record is abt your ancestor...

James named the oldest son as his father, Alphonso ( =Alfonso): the marriage record is right... on 1910 census also the James birthyear is wrong... but that is a normal error on these records.. the problem, now, is to find the italian birthplace....

I think I found their ship manifest. The last name is Gaudino and Guiseppe (James) is with his mom Maddalena and dad Alfonso. Unfortunately not a ton of info on the manifest. Can anyone help find additional info, or have an idea how to search Naples records?

I found a census from 1900 which has an Alfonso Gandino, born around 1839. He is older and lives with his wife (her name is very hard to read), born around 1844 and 1 child (of 6 total). Think this matches the Alfonso you found?
