Could someone hepl me out with the Savoca-Farfaglia Family ?

Post by MikeSavoca91 »

Hello, I have been working on my family tree for a while now and have come pretty far, but as I am sure most of you know you can't go far enough. I want to go back to find records of my family as far as I can, but do not speak Italian so I am at a disadvantage. I would really appreciate it if any one could help. My great grandfather was Vincenzo Savoca who came to America with his father Giovanni in 1913 and married Maria Farfaglia.I have a total of 6 generations, and want to keep going I feel no person should ever be forgotten. The info i have for you to go on is this:

The town- Castaglione Di Sicilia in Catania.
The surnames- Savoca, Farfaglia, Mamazza, DiSano, Ponticelli, Campioni, Scarvera, Lomonica or Lominica.

-If you want to help and need a little more info such as frist names or the exact tree I have contact me and I will be glad to fill in any blanks I can. Thank you all so much!!!!

Sorry but the image is cut off..I guess they were filmed poorly. Does anyone know if there is another way of accessing them or is the only way to order the microfilms from the library?

Thank you very much for that info, my great grandmother isn't listed on ellis island for some reason but i think she came around 1910. I have a bit of info when it comes to America i need to figure out how to get records when it comes to Sicily, I have the names of all of my great great great grandparents (I'm 15 so it isn't that far back). Do you know of a place where I could get like a template letter in Italian that I could mail or e-mail to the town for records? Also the people that my great grandfather were traveling with, how would I be able to find out what became of them? I have a feeling they were important parts of the family, because one of my great grandpa's brothers was named Carmelo and no one knows where the name comes from. Thank you so much for your help!

Mike,

15? Thats great. I think that what you are doing is wonderful and the fact that you are doing it so young is even better. Lots of people here are willing to help. There are many members who are also fluent in Italian and English so they can translate any letters/documents you may need translating.

For templates..
http://www.anzwers.org/free/italiangen/ ... #relatives

http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... /index.asp

To obtain Italian records there are a few different ways. You can either order microfilms from the town of birth of your ancestors (if available) or write to the comune. There are members here that can help with this info better than I can..

As for your great grandmothers ship manifest..that I maight be able to help you with..

The world war 1 draft card is GREAT!!! I will have to try and find a smaller version of it, where did you find it? I am not sure if it is him because of the birth date, my great grandpa was born on May 1, 1898. I will post a more detailed list of people in my family for you. You are a big help, I need to find more resources. Thank you again, can I help you with anything? I dont think I will be able to do much but i would be more then happy to give it a shot.

You can stand by and confirm info for now...dates are usually off here and there..Italians were never sure of their birthdays because it really didn't matter to them. Some went by the date that their births were registered. I have four different dates for my great grandfather. What we need to do is see if we can get a full copy of the card to see the rest of the info..

As for your great grandmothers manifest from ellis island..try using www.stevemorse.org instead. Gives you several different search options. If the above manifest is hers then she is listed..

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 0834%2ETIF

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 1496170314

First Name: Maria
Last Name: Farfaglia
Ethnicity: Italy, Italian South
Last Place of Residence: Castiglione, Catania
Date of Arrival: Dec 21, 1910
Age at Arrival: 25y Gender: F Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Berlin
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0014

Lets see if we can get you some addresses. By the way..how are you keeping track of all your info? www.familysearch.org has a free genealogy program you can download.

I'll give you the link in a bit.

*EDIT>>Incorrect Maria. Age is older then the Maria the poster is looking for.

Thank you, I have been asking questions about my family forever and as i got older and could work the computer I kept at it. I have reconected with cousins who are in their late 80's and the family hasn't spoken to in 40-50 years. I love it, and really want to put a name to as many people ask I can I dont want anyone to be forgotten, so I sit, type, read, and listen to Dean Martin putting names to long gone faces. And all the while learning about where I come from as well. The Maria Farfaglia on Ellis is to old, my great grandma was born 3/3/1903. This is such fun and gives me a good feeling to know there are people out there whe are willing to someone.

Dean Martin? Not too many 15 year olds I know (including my son) even know who that is

Nice to connect with family..hope you decide to take a family history course..this could be your calling!

Speaking of callings,,,,One other question ..why aren't you at school? Not that its any of my business..that the mom in me talking.  At least you're doing something productive...but don't forget to have fun and get out. This hobby is addicting.

Ok, lets see if we can find your great grandmother and some other info.

Mike we're all here to help. Some of the info we post comes from paid for subscription sites just as www.ancestry.com. Not sure if you can/want to invest as it can be costly but you have a look and decide.

If you are using Internet Explorer you can find the addresses of the town from this site..I found it doesn't work with Firefox though. Go to the left hand side of the screen to database. Click on the location link.
