prisons of Gaeta & Ischia

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

prisons of Gaeta & Ischia

Post by dmt1955 »

i have ancestors who were imprisoned and/or died in one &/or both of these prisons beginning in 1832, they were members of the carbonari who fought for constitutional government.

are there records that were kept of prisoners in either or both of these prisons as to the dates of imprisonment / release / death?

would a prisoner's death be recorded in the town of death as well as town of birth?

thanks,
Donna

Hi Donna
Have you checked the familysearch.org website?

For Ischia, see: https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/ ... l_Records)

The site may be useful, and you can check your ancestor's town of birth for records too.

Maybe some records are kept at Archivio di Stato in Naples, but that would need an on-site search, I think. I had a look at some online inventories, but it's a puzzle...

Sabino,
I am just seeing your post. I don't remember ever seeing a notification of a reply.

Thank you for this....Vito Purcaro, from Ariano di Puglia, is an ancestor of mine. The entry certainly provides additional and valuable information to my research.

Vito's father, Michele Purcaro, was imprisoned in 1832 during the failed movement with Father Angelo Peluso. I am not sure where he was sent to prison but know he died there.

I have two questions...penitentiary of San Stefano - you refer to the island prison in the bay of naples? Savoy fortress - where is that located?

i am so appreciative for this informtion.

thank you for the links, sabino. i look forward to looking at them. i try hard to understand given my limited ability to speak / understand italian.

as to Michele, I am awaiting a film of death records from his town (ariano di puglia). it is the only film of all civil records that I haven't reviewed, so I am assuming that his death record will be among them. it is through secondary information that mentions his death in prison a translation from a 12/3/1875 Il Piccolo (Naples) that was about Vito's death the previous month. It mentions Michele died in chains in prison from such brutal treatment.

thanks again,
donna
