Monsignor Antonino Di Matteo, Trabia

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Monsignor Antonino Di Matteo, Trabia

Post by Marlena »

Hello again,

I've been searching the Trabia birth records for my great-great- uncle, Monsignor (archbishop) Antonino Di Matteo, from Trabia, Sicily. I can't understand the dates and was timed-out for high volume usage on familysearch.org... I believe his birth-date is 1888 as shown in stone on the photo. I'm not sure what it says, possibly that he was ordained in 1909 in the other photo?

I believe his parents are Ignazio DiMatteo and Giuseppa Cancilla.

1. I'm hoping you can direct me by link to his birth records in familysearch.org. and,
2. Translate the writing on both stones.

Thanks you as always, Marlene

Hello!
I could not find a birth act for Antonino in 1888.
However, the writing in the first image is in Latin and states "pray for Antonino Di Matteo, once your parson, born in 1888. I'd translate the writing in the third image as "grave of a noble family" of the archpriest Antonino Di Matteo and his second degree male kin" - 1909

Now, I see he was quite young in the photo, but if he was born in 1888, he also was too young in 1909 to be an archpriest. So, I think there's some mistake. The date in the first photograph might even look like 1838, but in that case, he had to look like an old man in the photo...I'm puzzled.

Antoninio's brother, Bartolomeo DiMatteo is my great-great grandfather. I believe he was born around 1835 because his wife, Salvatora was born in 1837. That would make since for him to be born in 1838, maybe? The picture could have been taken when he was first ordained?
Thanks for searching!

I found the death acts of 4 children of Ignazio and Giuseppa Cancilla (included Bartolo).
According to ages declared, they all were born in the 1830's; so, if you are sure Antonino was their brother, he can't have been born in 1888; I'd say 1838 is right.

No, I do not have any information on any of the DiMatteo's or Cancilla family. Would you please send me the links? Thank you so much !

There are about ten Giuseppa Cancilla's, one of them might be Ignazio's wife.
