Re: Marriage of Allesandro Palange

Post by JohnArmellino »

An analysis of several sets of processetti, together with a couple of other documents, confirms that Pasquale Palange married Irene Maria Ricciuto and together they had several children, including your Alessandro Maria Palange. All events occurred in Campobasso unless otherwise noted.

Vincenzo Paolo Palange was the son of Pasquale and Irene Ricciuto. He married Irene Maria Taurozzi (his second marriage) on 19 AUG 1819. The processetti for this marriage included the groom’s birth extract (page 1), thereby confirming his parentage, and a death extract for his mother (page 3), thereby confirming the death of Irene Ricciuto on 11 AUG 1799. Sources: Campobasso (Campobasso), Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910, FHL INTL Film 1443287/PROCESSETTI 1819/No. del Reg. 64/foglio 1, 06 AUG 1819; Campobasso (Campobasso), Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910, FHL INTL Film 1443287/PROCESSETTI 1819/No. del Reg. 64/foglio 3, 06 AUG 1819.

Gaetano Palange was the son of Vincenzo Paolo and his first wife, Maria Palombo. Gaetano married Anna Maria Francesca Veleno on 11 FEB 1834. The processetti for this marriage included the groom’s birth extract (page 1), thereby confirming his parentage, a death extract for his father Vincenzo Paolo (page 2), and a death extract for his paternal grandfather Pasquale (page 3), thereby confirming the death of Pasquale Palange, then husband of Rosa Santangelo, on 08 AUG 1828 in Riccia. Sources: Campobasso (Campobasso), Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910, FHL INTL Film 1443298/PROCESSETTI 1834/N. d'ord. 6/foglio 1, 14 JAN 1834; Campobasso (Campobasso), Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910, FHL INTL Film 1443298/PROCESSETTI 1834/N. d'ord. 6/foglio 2, 11 JAN 1834; Campobasso (Campobasso), Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910, FHL INTL Film 1443298/PROCESSETTI 1834/N. d'ord. 6/foglio 3, 23 DEC 1833.

The above records establish that (1) Pasquale Palange was married to Irene Ricciuto at the time his son Vincenzo Paolo was born on 26 FEB 1780, (2) that Irene Ricciuto died on 02 AUG 1799, and (3) the same Pasquale Palange was married to Rosa Santangelo at the time of his death on 08 AUG 1828. Other records also confirm this, such as the processetti for the marriage of Angelo Maria Palange, son of Vincenzo Paolo and his second wife Irene Maria Taurozzi, to Maria Stella Presutti on 28 NOV 1846. Source: Campobasso (Campobasso), Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910 (Salt Lake City : Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1983-1990), FHL INTL Film 1443307/PROCESSETTI 1846/No. del Reg. 76, 30 DEC 1846.

Pasquale Palange and Maria Rosa Santangelo were married on 25 SEP 1800. The record states that Pasquale was a widower, but does not provide the name of either his first wife or his parents. Source: Parrocchia di S. Maria Maggiore - Cattedrale (SS.ma Trinità), Registri della Parrocchia, Matrimoni Libro VI/Folio 125/No. 4, 25 SEP 1800. While not conclusive in itself, this record fits the above established facts.

Thank you for gathering all this info. I figured there weren't two Pasquale Palange's but the way names repeat in families one never knows. Donna

John, I need to revisit this Pasquale Palange/Rosa Santangelo marriage once more. Since last I wrote I have researched their marriage. The birth of 6 children and many grandchildren. Today I came across Rosa's death record below.(6/4/1836) It clearly states that she was 75 when she died and was born in Campobasso. What I find unbelievable is that she was born in 1761 based on her age at death. That means she got married at 39 in 1800 and had children up until 1816. In your records do you have anything that would show her birth date? I don't think she would have had children until she was 56 years old...I'm thinking that she was perhaps born in 1771 at 29.

I don’t have a birth record in my database for Rosa Santangelo. I only have access to the baptismal records through 1762 and she was probably born after that year. Nor do I have any processetti for her marriage since she was married in 1800 prior to the implementation of the Registri dello Stato Civile. However, I do have her father’s baptismal record:

Francesco Antonio Santangelo, son of Domenico Santangelo and Chiara Ariemma, was baptized 29 JAN 1750 in Campobasso, Campobasso, Molise, Regno di Napoli. Source: Parrocchia di S. Maria Maggiore - Cattedrale (SS.ma Trinità), Registri della Parrocchia, Battesimi Libro VIII/Folio 422/No. 9, 29 JAN 1750.

If Rosa’s father was born in 1750, it’s very unlikely that Rosa herself was born in 1761. I suspect that the age recorded on her death record is in error. This is not unusual with death records.

I also have several other records that might interest you:

On the baptismal record of Giovanni Santangelo, son of Domenico Santangelo and Chiara Ariemma, dated 30 APR 1760, it states that Chiara Ariemma was from Cardito. Source: Parrocchia di S. Maria Maggiore - Cattedrale (SS.ma Trinità), Registri della Parrocchia, Battesimi Libro VIII/Folio 57/No. 7, 30 APR 1760.

On the death extract of Domenico Santangelo, dated 16 DEC 1820, it states that he was from Piedimonte. Source: Campobasso (Campobasso), Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910, FHL INTL Film 1443288, Processetti 1820/No. del Reg. 71/foglio 4, 16 DEC 1820.

Based on the above records, the Santangelo family did not originate in Campobasso -- Rosa Santangelo’s paternal grandfather was born in Piedemonte and her paternal grandmother was born in Cardito.

The death record of Rosa Santangelo appears to record the name of her mother as Carmina Taurozzi. However, in the birth records of her sons, Gennaro Maria Santangelo and Daniele Luigi Santangelo, her name is recorded as Erminia Taurozzi. Sources: Campobasso (Campobasso), Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910, FHL INTL Film 1443272/ Processetti 1809/Gennaro Santangiola con Vittoria Perrella , 08 OCT 1809; Campobasso (Campobasso), Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910, FHL INTL Film 1443286/ Processetti 1816/No. del Reg. 29/foglio 2, 12 SEP 1816. I was unable to find a baptismal record for Erminia Taurozzi through 1762.

You are most kind to dig all that up. It does support that Rosa was more likely born in 1771 or thereabouts. I found (accidentally) another child born to Rosa Santangelo and Pasquale Palange in 1801. Her name was Maria Irena Palange and based on the age on her marriage record, she was born in 1801. Probably safe to assume that she is the first born to Rosa and Pasquale. So far I have seven children and for three of them I actually have birth records as they were born after 1809. I'm showing Maria Irena 1801, Domenico Antonio abt. 1804, Ferdinando Apr. 1805, Gaetano Maria Jan. 1808, Rosanna 1/26/1811-8/6/1812, Maria Fiorenza 8/8/1812, and Rosanna 12/11/1816. This is probably the last child and if Rosa was born in 1771 rather then 1761, she would have been about 46 with this last child and that's pretty much pushing it for child bearing years. Donna
