Help with Ordering Records from Archivio di Stato di Napoli

Post by frattlaw »

So I found several records (13) in this particular archive during my online search.

However, I (and my Italian translator) are having a difficult time translating what information is actually required to order the records...

Here is a link to their order form...(of course its in Italian)

http://www.archiviodistatonapoli.it/wp- ... istici.pdf

The one part we are not understanding is this...

"SEGNATURE ARCHIVISTICHE DEI DOCUMENTI DA RIPRODURRE
Fondo, serie, N° del pezzo, N° della carta R[ecto], V[erso], N° pagine."

What is "Fondo?"

Has anyone here actually ordered records from Archivio di Stato Napoli before?

Can you just send them a copy of the search results and will that provide them enough information to locate and send you a digital copy ?

Thanks in advance.

I can't say what the correct equivalent of "fondo" is , in the English language of Archives, but I'd say it's a collection.
Here, you have a list of what can be found in Naples:

http://patrimonio.archiviodistatonapoli ... grafe.html

If you click on one of the items, you will read that it is mentioned as "description level: fondo".
If you can post an example of your search results, maybe I can tell you it can be enough for them (in my opinion, of course :-) )

I doubt they will search those records for you. I was in the Archives and had ordered a file which did not arrive (from wherever they had it stored) the same day. I had to hire a 'photographer' who was on hand to search the records the following day on my behalf. He found nothing and for the 10 Euro he requested I doubt he did more than glance at the records. The archivist won't do it. If you want these searched (and they are very difficult and tedious to search) hire a professional to do it for you.

I have no doubts that a professional researcher, such as yourself, could assist. And I might go that route. However I have had a tremendous amount of success without such assistance. Also, the power of a monetary donation to the church, archive or cultural organization is also quite motivating for them to provide assistance.

However, nothing is better than being there in person. I will be in Naples, Amalfi and Cava for 2-3 weeks in July and then again in September and will be spending the majority of my time in the archives. I am just trying to see what I can order prior to my trip.

But thank you for your advice.

I don't search in the Naples Archives as a general rule but there are others more experienced with these archives. (see side panel) You should try to order the records you need ahead of time so they are ready for you when you go. Good luck.

I will be in Maiori, very near Amalfi, from about July 20. If you want, send me a PM...we can have a talk.
