When I first enlarged the document, that was exactly what I was thinking, but I can't for the life of me figure out what the rest of the word is.

yes, i saw that too....i will have to look at the records again and see if i can figure out the record that is the backside of that page...maybe i can make out the writing.

It looks to me that it could be "Maestro Elementare" (primary school teacher).
Primary school education in Italy was reformed by the so-called "Legge Coppino" of 1877 who made public primary education free and attendance mandatory. Since the birth record is from 1889, it could be likely.
