Alessandro Raimo (father) is the son of deceased Nicola 'barriciello viaticale'

any thoughts if this is a type of viaticale OR something specific one hauls OR might it be a nickname OR.....

Hi Donna

I keep coming back to these records and I guess they are either dialect words or the second one, a nickname as you suggest. The word in the second record looks like "fracchivvo" but I don't know what this means. It sounds familiar though?

What I found through a (hard) Google search is that "barricello" (or the dialectal version "barriciello") is something very similar to a "viaticale" or "vaticale", that is, a man who carries things for the others with his own animals and/or carts..
As to the other word, I read "fracchivo", too, but I really can't say what it means... :-(

i thank you both for your efforts on this. pippo, i appreciate you going above and beyond! many of the records of this town, Volturara Irpina, are like this. it's a bit confusing, not to mention frustrating!

many many thanks,
donna

Just "food for thought" -
In the second image could we actually be looking at a double surname???

After Anna Di Feo's name is the unrecognizable word, THEN the occupation Contadino.

Later in the record, the witness Andrea Di Feo has "Andreone" after his name, and THEN identifies his occupation as Contadino...

I found a few Di Feo surnames that were double surnames (ex. Di Feo Cascino, Di Feo Agrillo, Di Feo Ricciadi) in Campania, but not specifically in Volturara Irpina. And while Andreone is a surname in the region, the closest I could find to the mystery word was the surname Facchiano.

Just throwing this out for you! :-)

thanks for your thinking on this tessa. all ideas are important to consider given the many mysteries of genealogy.

as i mentioned, many of these records, after the name of the adult (usually) male, indicate 'alias mincone' or 'alias ciaomo', or just one word after the name, such as, pacicco, sometimes capitalized sometimes not, but, always also includes a professione. maybe they really enjoyed nicknames.

thanks again. donna
