DelGrosso Family

Post by JoanShaffer »

Dr. Fabio,

I am trying to find information on my grandfather, Antonio DelGrosso. He was born 09/05/1878 in Colle Sannita. His father was Innocenza DelGrosso and his mother was Filomina Basile. We know very little about his life before he came to the United States. Any information about his family would be greatly appreciated.

Best Wishes,
Joan Shaffer

Have you sent to the town of origin for records? Checked the Lds for microfilmed records of birth, marriage and death?

Hi Joan; there are 9 people arriving in New York from Colle Sanita. One of them is Antonio DelGrosso, born @ 1880, married, leaving from Naples. He states that he is headed to his brother-in-law Giorgio Basilone in Hoversville?, PA. Does any of this match up to family history? Do you know his wife's name? If this works I'll keep looking.
good luck,stay in touch,

Senior,

I am taking information from his application for Social Security and he stated his birth as September 5, 1978. I know he left Italy as a young man. From my understanding he was unmarried until he married my grandmother here in Pennsylvania. Her name was Sarah Nichol. Although, my grandfather was 15 years older than my grandmother so there always could be a possibility he was married before. The name Giorgio Basilone is not familiar but Hooversville is approximately 25 miles from my home. So that could have been my grandfather. What year did he arrive in New York?

Thank you so much for all your help...............Joan

Joan; I did a search on ancestry.com and found 25 hits for Antonio DelGrosso. Only one was near his birthdate of 1878. I know in researching my family, whenever anyone came to this country from Italy, they would often round off the dates. My mother did not have a very high opinion of Ellis Island. From what my relatives have told me, there were never enough translaters to go around. Throw in the fact that so many immigrants were common people who did not read or write Italian, let alone English and you can see how some things got "rounded out". The Antonio I found arrived on 11 June 1905. The ship he came over on was the Weimar, departing from Naples. His estimated birth year was abt 1880. Once again, let me know if I can help with any info.

Joan,
You could write to the comune where Antonio was born for more complete information on his birth.

His birth extract will include:
- date, time & location
- father's name & mother's maiden name
- (often) parent's occupations
if there are marginal notes they may include
marriage, emigration or death information

Dear Joan Shaffer,

excuse me for delay of my answer, but I was very engaged and I had not the time to read your message.

Your grandfather was born in Colle Sannita on September 5, 1878, at 7 p.m.
His name was Onofrio Antonio Del Grosso.

His father, Innocenzo Del Grosso, was born in Colle Sannita on April 11, 1842. His parents were Damiano Del Grosso and Arcangela Tedesco

Filomena Basile (Onofrio Antonio's mother) was born in Colle on July 9, 1848. Her parents were Antonio Basile and Teresa Gagliardo.

I hope you will enjoy these informations.

Best Regards,
Dr. Fabio Paolucci
