Do you know anything about the place?
I'm wondering if it was Storthes Hall:

Searching for my great x3 grandfather Raffaele CIACCIA, also known as Raphael/Ralph CHURCH. He was born in Napoli around 1792 and arrived in London before 1812 with his brother Saverio CIACCIA, where they married sisters Ann and Jane FURNEAUX. He switched between CHURCH and CIACCIA all his life, which has made it difficult enough to pin him down. I want to find his origin in Italy.

Do you have access to the 1911 census, as he is listed on FindMyPast, aged 12, but I can't see any more without paying them.

Re: stoathes hall wakefield
yes sorry you spelt it right. He is a bit of a mystery my great uncle he joined as a sea merchant and we think he left after his service i have him on a ship going to america in 1921. There was always a family mystery surrounding him the story went that he had stabbed someone and killed them, we don't know whether this was on board ship or not, We don't think it is cus we have his original sea documents and it says if they were kicked out or any disciplinary then the top right hand corner of the document would be torn off, and it is still in tact. He was supposed to have pleaded insanity to save himself from hanging and got sent to Australia. (what date we do not know). Then my grandad and his brother were supposed to have got him back somehow, we have found him coming in from australian from brisbane to hull in 1935. Which ties in with the stories we were told. We were then told he spent the rest of his life in storthes hall where he died in 1968. so as you see its a bit of a mystery which i would love to solve. so far i have had no luck. thanks for trying though.

Re: stoathes hall wakefield
So there is a possibility he may have ended up in the Storthes Hall Psychiatric hospital?
Pretty sure you should be able to find hospital records, which may be old enough by now to be accessible. I'll have a bit of a think, I'm pretty sure I have a link somewhere to a useful website.

Re: stoathes hall wakefield
hi thanks for that you are a star. I may be a bit thick (lol). We have him entering england in 1935 to hull. Does this mean that this is the document that proves he left australia ? and any ideas on how i check to see if he was in this colony. Once again many many thanks

Re: stoathes hall wakefield
Honestly, I am not certain what the document(s) is/are. My impression is that they have something to do with his leaving Australia in 1934.emira wrote:hi thanks for that you are a star. I see that the link I previously provided may not have worked as intended, so try this instead:
Click http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/
Click the "Guest" button
Enter "ernest cassinelli" (without the quotes) in the box labeled Keywords
Click the "Search" button
On the next page, click the "Request Copy" link near the upper right.
Follow the instructions given
Also, you can try copying the record details I posted in my earlier message into an email along with the question, "Can you tell me what this record would consist of so that I can decided if it will advance my research efforts?" and then send to archives@naa.gov.au (remove the spaces). I have no idea what the response time might be, however.

you are all so amazing with your endless knowledge and taking the time to find things out for me i can't thank you engough honestly. Yes i had all that and we even have his original sea document and the right hand corner is still intact, so we are presuming he committed this offence after his sea legs. the last ship i have him on is to new york in 1921. but why can't i find out when he entered australia or why he entered australia?
Re: stoathes hall wakefield
yes it is strange... however starting from 1921 the records, and he must be ... I found the entry in USA in 1919 no in 1921... so he left the USA for the Australia after the 1921... but I cannot find it...

Here are some links to forums where other people are researching Storthes Hall as well - seems there may be a 100 year rule on records, but this may be of some help - gives some interesting background anyway.
