Numerous Surnames
Numerous Surnames
I am new to the forum. I have been trying to find out information on my family for a while now. I have gotten as far as ship records from when my great-grandparents came over from Italy but that's about it. I would love to get information on my family from Italy. The surnames I am searching are Petrillo, Musto, Paradiso, Nardone, Domino and Leonardis. They are all from pretty much the same region of Campania. I know for sure that my grandfather was from San Giorgio la Molara. I have some from San Martino Sannita as well. They are all from the part of Naples. Any help would be great! Thank you so much and I appreciate any help I can get on here.
Re: Numerous Surnames
If you have completed all US research, identified the town of origin, you can send for documents, or research those same records with microfilm.
San Giorgio la Molara
however the above dates are limited, 1809 - 1860, same dates available for
San Martino Sannita
You could access this resource once you have placed family in that time frame.
To request documents, the following is an interactive form letter sent to the stato civile to request birth, marriage and death records:

Re: Numerous Surnames
Tracy,
Just a note. Both towns you mentioned are in the province of Benevento, not Naples. Many of our families said they were from Naples because it was the biggest city in the area and that is where they sailed from. My grandparents were from Benevento also, and many people from their town immigrated to the same part of the US and intermarried, lived and worked together.
Do you have census records also?

Re: Numerous Surnames
I do have census. I know most information from family that came here from Italy but would love to find out about my family that remained in Italy. My grandfather has said that most of the records were destroyed but I am not sure if that's correct or not. I believe too that I still have family in Italy.

Then go to this website and write away for any documents you wish:

Requested documents are normally free of charge so you have nothing to lose and a family to gain. =Peter=

Re: Numerous Surnames
Paradiso is one of the 5 most common names in the town of San Giorgio>

Petrillo appears in both towns, Nardone in San Martino, Domino in San Giorgio, Musto and Leonardis appear in neither town today. (Perhaps they all moved to big cities)
Domino will be the easiest name to trace because it is relatively rare.

Re: Numerous Surnames
The Uffico di Stato Civile (municipal vital statistics office will tell you in each town you write to if the people you are seeking have documents provided you can provide a full name and approximate the year of birth (+/- 5-10 years). =Peter=
