Code on ship manifest

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Code on ship manifest

Post by PippoM »

Hi all,
I would like to know what the code written over a name on a ship manifest means.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... ction=view

If I remember, it was something about naturalization, but I'd need to know accurately.
Particularly, I'm interested in the code on the first line.
Thank you!

In my experience it's the number for a U.S. naturalization record.

I think they verified arrival by searching the manifest and then wrote in the record number above the manifest line. It could be filed in the year 1941.

I'm not sure about 2x. Could it be the second application for citizenship?

It's possible, but it depends on the birth year (and not only).
The original Italian name in her birth record is Camelia.

2 is the district number where naturalization was filed

"X" indicates that the arrival was before 1906, so applicant did not have to pay the "Certificate of Arrival" fee

117860 is the application file number

5/8/41 is the verification date (May 8, 1941 in USA)

Usually if a document was issued, you would see "505" code indicated
