Re: need to affirm back four generations

Different countries, different customs.....Italy is not the only country where the wife keeps her maiden name.

Again, the child's first name does appear to start with an R....but is written over with Villa.

It's not uncommon to see this type of mistake, and I'm sure the children did have the fathers surname, the person could have been in a hurry, may have had trouble understanding the accent and just did what was easiest.

Possibly related manifest
Silvia Villa and 4 children

17 Mar 1907 SS Virginia Genoa to NY
1907 manifest
- all born in Pietra Ligure (Savona, Liguria)
Note: Pietra Ligure is located abt 60 km sw of Genoa

I am trying to order my GGM's birth certificate, and I was told I need the commune or exact city where she was born. I cannot find this information on the manifest. It just says Pietra Ligure which subdivide further.

Also the manifest reads something like "Ceriana" under column 10, last town of residence.

Is the breakdown like this largest to smallest: Liguria, Savona, Pietra Ligure? Are there communes or hamlets of Pietra Ligure, or is that as small as it gets? Is Ceriana a hamlet? Ceriana is also relatively far from Pietra Ligure. Maybe they had moved there before coming to America, but that seems like quite a distance to move for back then.

Thanks

Greetings all.

Ok, I have requested Maria Rizzo's birth certificate from both Ceriana (last residence) and Pietra Ligure and both have turned up negative. According the ship manifest, these are the only two possibilities. Should I give up? Any suggestions? Maybe look under Maria Villa, even though this is her mother's last name?

Grazie mille.

There is a Frank Figoni arriving at NYC on 3/29/1886 at age 50 (dob1836) which may or may not be relevant to you. =Peter=

nfig1 wrote: 13 Dec 2007, 12:44 Hello. I need to verify that the individual I think is my great-great-grandfather is indeed the correct person. My grandfather's name is Frank Louis Figone, Sr., born in California around 1911. (After this I am unclear since I never knew my great-grandparents on my dad's side.) I believe his father's name is Louis Figone, born Louis Figoni in California in 1888. I believe the original paternal ancenstor from Italy, Frank Figoni, was born in 1860 and arrived in the USA in 1884. Thank you.
Hi, I’m looking for a Denise Figone. Born early 1920s in Burlingame CALIFORNIA
