Help me to search my grandfather's photo

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Help me to search my grandfather's photo

Post by clark81 »

Hi all,
I need for your help!!! You're my last hope...

I'm searching a photo of my grandfather that went to U.S.A. from Italy (port of Naples) by ship in 1903 when he was 18 yrs old (he went back about in 1910-15) and in 1923 (approx he came back Italy in 1930-40).
I found on Ellis Island site all information of date of arrival, ships name and where he lived (Providence, R.I.), but there's no photo.

I would like to find a his photo, but I don't know which archive or U.S. office can have it and who can help me. Can you help me?

I know that's rather impossible find it, but with your help I want to try.

Thanks in advance to all!

Did you try searching the passport archive on ancestry.com? If he travelled back and forth you might be able to find a passport with a photo. I know I found two passports for relatives traveling to Italy in the 1920's, both of which have photos. I'll look for you when I get home from work later today.

Hi Clark81

The passenger manifests do not contain any photos of individuals. If your ancestor was naturalized, you may find a photo with his naturalization record, but often it s a copy of a microfilmed record. Not very good photo quality.

If he ever applied for a passport, you may find a record and photo as indicated above.

Hi again!

I just reread your message and realized that you did not post a name. If you don't have footnote or ancestry.com, post the name you looking for and I will have a look for you. Let me know. I can e-mail you the results if you like.

Thanks!

KCW

PS. The people on this site are fantastic! If there's information out there, these are the people to consult. I've received so much good advice! And I've only been here on this site two days!!!!

His name is Vincenzo Rufo and he was born in 1885.

He went to U.S.A from port f Naples to Ellis Island. He lived in Providence, R.I. and travelled from Italy to U.S.A two times (1903 and 1923).
I don't know if he has been naturalized.

Thank you very very much for your precious help!!!!

I'm waiting for good news... Thanks!

Ciao Clark81,

as I saw on 1923 arrival for Vincenzo that he was in USA before from 1912 to 1915. I searched in the Arrivals and found this other manifest:

From: http://www.ancestry.com/search/

Atlantic Ports Passenger Lists, 1820-1873 and 1893-1959
about Vincenzo Rufo
Name: Vincenzo Rufo
Arrival Date: 28 May 1914
Age: 29 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1885
Gender: Male
Ethnic Background: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Madonna
Port of Arrival: Providence, Rhode Island
Friend's Name: Alfonso (his brother)
Last Residence: Italy
Birthplace: Scapoli, Italy
Microfilm Roll Number: 7

When he entered the U.S. he was not an american but an Italian citizen so it's possible he never asked for the naturalization.
If it is so, it will be impossible find an american passport with photo....
When my Grandfather came back from the U.S, in Italy in 1926 (after 13 years in California) he used an Italian Passport issued by the Italian consulate in San Francisco because he never did the documents to became american citizen....
I think that your grandfather had an italian passport....

Dear Laura,
thank you very much for your resaerch; i didn't know that he came back Italy for 1st war....

So, if he didn't ask for U.S. citizenship and he used italian passport for his travels to U.S.A, do you know to which italian office/archive I can try to ask a copy of his italian passport?

I think (because Italy is not U.S.A....) that in Italy is impossible to find a document of 80-90 years ago...

Another question: do you think that in R.I. state (Providence) there's no document with a photo?

Thank you all because you're very helpful people!!!

Ciao Clark,

Idee? Thx!
