Re: Monterosso and Puccini Families of Sinopoli Reggio Calab

I have finally had a breakthrough. I have managed to get some birth and marriage documents from Sinopoli thanks to response to a forum on ancestry.com.
I have finally found that my great grandfather, Cosmo Monterosso, did have siblings. I also found his mothers name was Filomena Rugnetta (I knew her first name but not maiden name) and confirmed his fathers name was Saverio Monterosso. I cannot contain my excitement at finding all of this information.
So far I have found that he had a sister Grazia Maria Monterosso who married Vincenzo Fimmano in 1899 and a brother Domenico Monterosso who married Palma Luppino in 1907.
I also found that my grandfather Saverio Andrea Monterosso had an older brother of the same name, born in 1910 (my grandfather was born in 1921). I would think that he must have died young so they named their last child and only son after him (and his grandfather of course). Does anyone know if it was customary to do this? I am surprised that my father and his siblings did not know about him because they did know of a sister of my grandfather that died young.
I can now see how invaluable obtaining birth and marriage records can be. I will definitely be visiting a family history centre to continue my research.
Funny thing is, I began doing all of this research when my Grandfather Cosmo Puccini died 3 months ago, and the today when I received all of this information, would have been his 81st Birthday.

Hi all,
I have had another look at familysearch.org and been able to trace my Monterosso family name back to 1806. The previously mentioned Saverio Monterosso that I had seen is in fact my Cosmo's father, and I can trace it back another generation to his grandparents Giuseppe Monterosso born 1806 and his wife Caterina Fedele. This could probably be the link to the "nephew" Carmelo Fedele that Cosmo travelled to America with.
I have also found another two brothers of Cosmo. Both named Vincenzo (one died at birth). However, there is a very large gap from the first born Vincenzo born 1861 to last born Cosmo abt 1879. Does this seem like a large gap or because they had so many children back then was this normal? If it is there are probably more siblings to discover.
The other thing I found strange was that the first born Vincenzo was not named after to the grandfather Giuseppe which I thought would have been customary back then.
Still searching...

Re: Monterosso and Puccini Families of Sinopoli Reggio Calab
Hi all,
I have been spent many hours at the FHC looking through Birth and Marriage records from Sinopoli.
I have discovered another two siblings for Cosmo. Mariantonia Monterosso b and Pasquale Monterosso b 1872. I can assume that his brother Domenico and his family stayed in Sinopoli as his wife Palma Luppino's birth record states that she died there in 1958.
So in summary I have:
Brother Vincenzo b 1861 (assuming he died young)
Brother Vincenzo b 1863
Sister Mariantonia b 1866
Brother Pasquale b 1872
Sister Grazia Maria b 1876 (married Vincenzo Fimmano)
Brother Domenico b 1880 (married Palma Luppino)
I still have not found Cosmo's birth record. I now believe he and possibly other siblings were born in Sant' Eufemia. Waiting on these films now. I also think he should have a brother named Guiseppe and sister named Caterina, as they would be named after his fathers parents. I now will see if I can find any descendants of his siblings which may know something about his death. His birth record will hopefully have an annotation on it. Not sure if his siblings migrated to America or stayed in Italy.
Still searching....
Josie
PS - Searching through the FHC films I have managed to trace back every branch of both sides of my family back to my great great grandparents (except for the Puccini line, his birth record stated parents unknown.) Also, while researching and talking to my grandmother, she revealed to me that her Grandfather killed his wife (her Grandmother) because he thought she was unfaithful while he was in America. This family history research can uncover some interesting stories.

PPS - Another story uncovered is that my great grandfather Cosmo's brother in law Guiseppe Condina changed his name to Jack Ross after killing someone in self defense on the Brooklyn Bridge in the 1920's. Now I am curious to know if he had children, did they keep the surname Condina or take the surname Ross???

I am looking for some information on my great father. His name was Cosmo Monterosso. He was born in Sinopoli or Santa Eufemia Reggio Calabria around 1883. Around the 1920's he was travelling back and forth to Pittsburgh PA USA working in the mines with his brother in laws (wifes brothers) surname Condina, who I believe were living in America at the time. In 1926 he apparently died of Influenza. What haven't been able to find is information on his burial site and whether he had any brothers or sisters.
My grandfather (Cosmo's son) Saverio Monterosso then migrated to Adelaide Australia on the Cyrenia, 7 December 1949 , bringing the rest of his family, which included his sister Filomena Puccini's family, over the next 7 years.
On the Puccini side, my great grandfather Guiseppe Adolfo Puccini (Filomena's husband) was adopted so we don't know if this was his actual surname or if was given to him at the orphanage making it impossible to find any information.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. I have requested a login. Will await a reply. I think I have found most of the Monterosso family. I have gotten a bit stuck with the Tripodi, Carbone and Gioffre surnames. Look forward to looking at your research.

Re: Monterosso and Puccini Families of Sinopoli Reggio Calab
Hi all,
I received a letter today from the Italian military in response to a letter I sent asking for my grandfather Saverio Monterosso's POW record. But it didn't have much information regarding where he was held in the USA, but rather more info on how much they were paid during the war (which was $82.90 during his military career). Perhaps i worded the letter incorrectly. I really wanted to know where he was held in America as a POW. This info seems hard to find. I have a copy of his military record but there is a gap for when he was a POW. All we know is that while he was there he met up with a soldier from the US army who was his first cousin, Diego Creazzo. Maybe if i could find info about where he was posted, it might lead to finding out where my grandfather was kept prisoner. Any suggestions?

Hi all,
It's been a while since I posted. I did eventually find my great grandfather Cosmo Monterosso's Birth record. He was born in San Procopio in 1878, which is close to where I was searching in Sinopoli and Sant' Eufemia. I don't know what happened to Cosmo's siblings, whether they stayed in Italy or migrated to the US or Australia and still have no record of his death which was around 1926/1928. we know he entered the US in 1907, 1909, 1921 and 1925 ( I have the ship manifests for these dates), but have no record of him after these dates.
I have started a facebook page called Monterosso Family https://www.facebook.com/pages/Monteros ... 7502478787
I thought doing this I might find descendants of his Monterosso siblings, but haven't had any connections so far. I had managed to track down a descendant of my great Grandmother Grazia Condina. Some of her siblings migrated to the US and I had chatted to one of her sisters great grandsons who had heard the story of Giuseppe Condina/Jack Ross. He said he had heard someone mention Cosmo, so I thought I was in luck, but I haven't been able to get in contact with him again.
I am also still wanting to find out where my Grandfather Saverio Monterosso was held as a POW in America.
I am keen to start my research again, but don't know where to go from here. Any suggestions?

Hi there, sorry for my late reply. I haven't been on here for a long time. The have two Caterina Fedele's in my family tree. One is my great, great, great grandmother born in 1808, married to Giuseppe Monterosso had a son Saverio in 1827 and died in 1987, aged 19. The other Caterina Fedele was my great great great grandmother another branch of my family tree was born 1821, married to Rocco Tropepe and had a daughter named Carmela. I only have these dates from birth and marriage records I have. I have a copy of the birth record of my great great grandfather Saverio Monterosso which states the Mothers names as Caterina and father Giuseppe. The other record is a marriage record from 1840 of Rocco and Caterina, states her parents names as Carmine and ?something? Gioffre I think. They were both from Sinopoli. If you send me your email address I am happy to send you copies of these records. Hope I have been of some help

Hi all,
It's been a long time since my last post. But I have had another breakthrough. I have recently done an ancestry.com dna test. I thought it would just show where my family originate from (which it's stating 69% Sicily, not Calabria which I have traced back to the 1700's for both sides of my family, plus 13% Turkey region and 14% Middle East region), but it also shows you anyone who has matched i.e. 2nd, 3rd, 4th cousins etc. I have made contact with a few, but yesterday I had a reply from a 4th cousin who is a descendant of my great grandfather Cosmo's sister Vincenza (who I hadn't yet discovered, but she has the same parents as Cosmo). Vincenza married Rocco Fedele, and they had a son Carmen Fedele, who is the nephew my great grandfather had travelled and stayed with on his last couple of visits to America. This person also has a copy of my great grandfathers death certificate which states he died of pneumonia on 12 Sept 1925 (the name was misspelled which is why I hadn't found it). They person did say however: "I was actually surprised to find pneumonia on the death cert, as I had heard the story that my Grandfathers uncle was shot and murdered as he walked out of church. As my mother told the story, people called her uncle Romeo because he was a very good looking man. He gained the attention of the wife of a high level mobster. Angered, the mobster put a hit on him and had him shot as he walked out of Sunday Mass." We had heard a similar story too, but I suppose you would have to go by the death certificate? Maybe there was another uncle murdered in this circumstance.
Anyway, I have been looking for this file for 9 years and it turns up 1 year to the day I had visited the birth place of my ancestors, Sinopoli Calabria, for the first time.
There are still lots of other people to contact from the ancestry.com dna test matches, so I'm sure I will discover more. I have also found a couple of skeletons in the closet, just not sure where exactly they belong yet... to be continued
