Giordano, Distasio, Perone, Pesci, Mendola Families

Post by mainelygenealogy »

I know my Pesci family came from Valentano, Viterbo, Lazio, Italy, not sure yet where the other surnames are from. I am researching Francesca Pesci b. abt 1897 in Italy. The immigration records show that her uncle Domenico Pesci is her nearest living relative in Italy at the time of her immigration to the US. She went to New Jersey to live with her brother Thomas. She traveled with two sisters, Agata, and Lucia. I was wondering what would be the best way to find out who her parents were?

Welcome to the Forum!

In the US

If she filed an application for social security you can request a copy (abt $30).
It will have her parent's names on it.

Social Security Application SS-5

If she had a SS#, it should be available here if you don’t already have it:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true

About the SS Application:
http://genealogy.about.com/od/online_re ... equest.htm
The SS-5, or Application for Social Security Number is a great resource for learning more about individuals who died after about 1960, and generally includes the following:
- Full name
- Full name at birth, including maiden name
- Present mailing address
- Age at last birthday
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Father's full name
- Mother's full name, including maiden name

- Sex
- Race as indicated by the applicant
- Whether the applicant ever applied for Social Security or Railroad Retirement before
- Current employer's name and address
- Date signed
- Applicant's signature
Order form SSA-711 (can be done online):

In Italy

If you know a more exact birth date for Francesca Pesci or her siblings you can request their birth record from the comune.

Research in Valentano by writing to the comune:

Thankyou for the information. Unfortunately, I don't have a better date of birth, and am not sure when or where she died. After marrying the Perrone, she divorced and remarried, and nobody seems to know who. I have been in touch with New York City, as that is where she married the first time. Am hoping to put the loose ends together for this one. The only way I know the approximate birth date is the age on the ships list at her immigration.

Thanks again

Hey Brenda!
Thank you for the update :D .
If this is Francesca's brother Thomas (Tommaso) you could write to Valentano for his birth record?
There is no charge for this request. If the comune needs money for copying anything they'll let you know. A self-addressed envelope is usually appreciated.
Note, there are at least two Thomas Pesci in Somerset County, both born in Italy.

or request his SS Application?

Thomas wife was Emma. I have them in the 1920 Census of Raritan, Somerset, New Jersey. That could be them. Thankyou again,,this is great!!

Hi, Valarie :D !

Interesting 1905 manifest for a Tommaso Pesci from Valentano, born about 1889 travelling with Santi(e) Pesci and Angelo Pesci--brother and father??

mainelygenealogy,
If you check the 1920 census record you found, Tommaso's first male child was named Angelo; based on naming conventions/traditions, that could be his and Francesca's father's name.

I had to share some news with you all. I found someone researching the Pesci family in Raritan, Somerset Co., NJ. This is where Francesca was living with her brother Tommaso. Let's keep our fingers crossed!!!! He is a Pesci, and has responded to my email. He wants to share information. Maybe he has something I don't, and maybe the line I am doing, I can finish for him.
