Help finding Ship Manifest
Help finding Ship Manifest
Wow. What a great site. Scrolling through some posts indicates to me that there a lot of very helpful people here so I though I would just post my two dilemmas and see if anybody can suggest a course of action to me.
I started doing research a few months ago and have found a great many records suing Ancestry.com, the Castle Garden lists, and other sites. I have found Census records, ship manifests, naturalization papers, military papers, etc. It has been a great experience so far but I have run into two dead ends.
1 - I cannot find anything about my paternal great grandmother (Agnese?): Married to Silvio DeVita who remarried after my paternal great grandmother died (in Italy? abt 1896?). Silvio arrived USA aboard SS Nuestria 9/17/1890. Is naturalized 10/19/1890. Silvio and Agnese have Donato in March 1893. I have not found a 1900 census for either Silvio or Agnese and the next document is a 1902 Passport application in Naples showing Silvio returning to the US wife his son Donato and new wife Angelina and son Armondo. Fact: Silvio and Angelina from Calabritto and believed that Agnese was also. Any ideas??
2 - I cannot find passenger list for my maternal great grandmother, Caterina Guardino. Married to Diego Guardino. I have found census records but unable to locate ship manifest. Diego arrived Sept 20 1897 SS Britannia. Born march 25, 1859 in Sciacca and died Oct 12, 1930 in NY. Caterina born Aug 12, 1871 Sciacca and died Mar 14, 1951 NY. The census records indicate she arrived in 1910. Her maiden and married name were Guardino - they were 4th cousins. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Frank

Just for clarification
Is this the correct passport application for Silvio DeVita/o?
His 1900 census should be in Newark?
Thank you

Re: Help finding Ship Manifest
Yes Valerie
This is correct although not all the info on it is correct.
Silvio did not come over on in Aug 1888 - he came over in 1890 on the Nuestria. And Silvio did not stay consecutively from then until dec 1901 - he came back from Italy in sept 1899 on the Lombardia. Otherwise everything else seems to be correct.
thanks

Re: Help finding Ship Manifest
Thank you Frank
1)
I thought I saw another manifest
Have you tried writing to Calabritto for any records
It may help if you knew Agnese's maiden name - unless she traveled with Silvio, her ship manifest should be under her maiden name.
2)
I looked for the census for Caterina that indicated that she arrived in 1910.
The only census records I could find were for a Diego Guardino and Caterina where their children were born in the US before 1910.
Thank you, Valarie

Frank, this marriage record probably belongs to the same family whose census records indicate the children were born in the US before 1910, Caterina immig abt 1890
Could they be related to your family?

Thank you - that is them. I wish I could find evidence of Caterina Guardino coming to the states. I have the passenger list for Diego but am having a hard time finding the list for Caterina.
Thanks again!

Re: Help finding Ship Manifest
Is the following manifest among those you viewed?
Caterina Guardino, age 32, domestic, married
SS. Spartan Prince, arriving Dec. 19, 1899, NY
from Sciacca, going to Mother-in-law (written in after "my allied Anna Sanfillipo, Elizabeth St.)

Re: Help finding Ship Manifest
Sorry...
Just realized that we're now looking for manifests prior to the marriage date of 1892.

Re: Help finding Ship Manifest
Here is a possibility. These early manifests have very little information, but take a look...
SS Australia, Naples to New York, arriving Oct. 9, 1890
C. Guardino, age 24, dressmaker, born in Italy

Re: Help finding Ship Manifest
Thanks I had seen that one and that is not her. She will be abt 19 years old arriving in 1890. From all that I can find, it looks like she came over alone.
Caterina Guardino
Born: Dec 8, 1871 - most likely Sciacca, Italy (Sicily)
Died: Mar 14, 1951 - NY
I reviewed all I know about her with my relatives and 1 person mentioned that she thought she heard somewhere along the line that Caterina was born in the USA, but the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census each indicate that she came over from Italy in 1890, 1889, 1890 respectively.
Thanks again

I noticed that one of the "boarder" in the 1900 is Ignazio Curreri, possible he was Caterina's brother?
