Correct. Once I verify their records via microfilm, how do I obtain the actual documents? Would I contact a government office/city-hall-type place in Sciacca and see if they could send those to me?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am completely new to this.

I think the birth should have been registered in the comune.

Looking at the city names in Tunisia, it seems Gabes is still the closest match for what is written in the manifest.

Also, I am going to be in Sciacca in March and will go to city hall to see if I can get the documentation I need.

Grazie mille!

I assume you know for sure that the record was transferred from Tunisia to Sciacca? If not please let me know. =Peter=

Unfortunately, I don't know for sure. I suppose the first step is verify that by searching microfilms at a Family History Center?

Hopefully the consulate would have registered the birth with the comune. When Mark checks the microfilm, he will find all the info about the family born in Sciacca. That way he will be prepared in case he has to deal with the diplomats (???) at the Italian Consulate or Embassy in Tunisia.

By the way there are some other threads that deal with records from Tunisia.

For Tunisia you write to the Office of the Registrar (BUREAU DE L'ETAT) where the event occurred GABES. The French from 1920 and the Italian from 1873 Consulates in Tunis have records of thebirth of French and Italian citizenbs reported to them. Marriage records are conplete fromn August 1,1957 and for prior times for civil martriages.

The Roman Catholic Church in Tunis keeps records for all persons baptized in Tunisia. =Peter=

Good luck getting anything from the Office of the Registrar. All they will tell you, if they answer, is the write to the Prelature of Tunis for a birth/marriage/death record.

Out of all my family born or died in Tunisia, none were reported to the comune nor were they acknowledged as Italian until earlier this year when I was able to send all family records to the Italian Embassy in Tunis to have then certified and then I had to send them to the comune in Italy where they were then recorded.

P.S. The Prelature is quite easy to work with but very, very slow. Some requests have taken up to a year to fulfill. Their research office is very poorly staffed so patience is the word.

Your welcome. Forgot to add, they charge for their records. The cost, as of 6 months ago, was 6 euros. Be sure to include a self addressed envelope. Your letter needs to be in French.

I use this LDS site to write the letter.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... French.ASP

They seem to be speedier when the euros are enclosed.
