Help with italian handwriting

Post by Floria »

Hello,

Could someone please help reading the declaration made on the right hand page?

I'm attaching the image but contrast and brightness can be adjusted on this link:

Thanks in advance!

Birth record #109 for Anastasia Ercolano, a foundling born in Piedimonte d'Alife to unknown parents on May 3, 1843.
Side note: Marriage to Cosmo Landino on 1st April, 1868.

Hi mmogno,

Thank you so much!

I was hoping to understand the actual text. (At least the 7-line handwritten paragraph at the end).
Sadly, all I can read is "... oggi sopradetto giorno alle ore dieci? .. sopradetta... " 🤣😢

Can you actually read what it says there?

Do you know how it was decided which last name to give to orphans?

What I can read-Today, on the above street, the infant was abandoned at the wheel of the house and had no apparent signs on its body. The ruota was a mechanism built into a bldg which allowed an individual to anonymously abandon an infant or child. Sometimes it was at a convent or other town building.

As to what surnames were given to abandoned infants, it depended on the town. Some assigned infants surnames like Esposito (exposed) or Trovatelli (found) which indicated their status as abandoned children. Other officials to whom the infant was presented just invented surnames so that no one else in the town had the same surname.

Yes it does start off “today on the day above”. Street above at the ruota (wheel) is on the next line.

@erudita74 and @mmogno

Thank you so so much!!

I was hoping for some more specific details in the declaration, that's why I was so set on understanding the text.
But this is perfect, and thanks again for all the explanation.

Thanks again!

she was certainly abandoned to the convent wheel. The daughters of charity took care of it. every year girls of marriageable age were selected and a dowry was given to them. (money donated by the rich population). We have the lists. There are many things present.
