Guido in Spezzano della Sila, Cosenza

Post by bguido »

Hello friends!
I am just starting my search. My grandfather was born in 1872 in Spezzano della Sila and I plan to visit in the Fall.
I want to find more info on him during his 21 years before he emigrated to USA.
His wife was Caterina Barbieri born in 1876.

I am having no luck since all the sites say nothing is there. Family search, etc.

Can someone suggest ideas? He was baptized in Church of San Biagio

Ultimately I want to know where they lived in town, are there any relatives remaining, etc etc.

Thank you in advance!

Hello,
I understand that Guido is the surname.
What is the name?
There are 2 with a surname Guido born in 1872 in Spezzano Grande.
Antonio and Domenico.

This is the birth of Barbieri Caterina.
Born on 11 May 1876 in Spezzano Grande.
Parents are Biagio, 24yo and Lucrezia Pingitore.

Thank you for confirmation of Caterina

My great grandfather is Antonio born 3 February 1872.

Is there a way to find out what house they lived in since I plan to come and visit in September.
Also other people in Spezzano with the same lineage?

Here is the birth act of Antonio Guido in 1872.
Parents: Michele Guido, 30, son of Gaetano; and Mariantonio Rizzo, 27, daughter of deceased Bartolo(?).
Child was born on 2 February at midnight in their home in contrada Caporale.

WOW. Thank you. Is Contrada Caporale a street or a portion of the village?

Contrada is a district of a town, usually land outside the center of the comune, but within the countryside of the town/comune. Since Michele is identified as a massaro (farm manager, steward), I believe he resided on the farm/land of the farm owner.

Note: In 1928, the towns of Spezzano Grande and part of Spezzano Piccolo merged to become Spezzano Della Sila. Some streets, roads, etc. may have had names changed.

Thank YOU.
Do you think there are civil records that would show what street they would have lived on?

If you find the marriage of Antonio and Caterina, or a birth act for a child born to the couple, you MAY find a street name.

AH. I see they were married in Pennsylvania...

Then look for a death act for Antonio's parents in Spezzano, if they did not immigrate.

Yes they were married in Pennsylvania. How do I best find a death act for Antonio's parents?

Here is the death act for Michele Guido in 1888 June.
It is in part II of the death acts because Michele died in a hospital in the Comune of Filippavilla (that is what I read - but cannot find the town).
He was the husband of Maria Rizzo.
He was age 48, and a day laborer.
It does not give an address of their home since he died in a hospital.
He was born in Spezzano Grande, the son of [living] Gaetano Guido, and of deceased Maria Scarnato.

Bottom right and next page...

Before you go, write to the comune and let them know you will be coming. The offices, or the clerical staff for vital records, are not available/open on a regular basis. If you let them know that you will be coming, and what information you wish to find, they can provide you information for times to visit the Vital Registration Office.

You can write at this address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Spezzano della Sila
Via Fausto Gullo 1
87058 - Spezzano della Sila (CS)
Italy

Here is the website of the comune...

One question: If Antonio was born at home at midnight, Is there a house address on the paperwork?
