Re: translate please

Oops,

Thanks for the correction to my correction Tommaso.

You are evidently a wise man and not a wise guy.

Re: translate please

If I may contradict you Ricardo, although you have translated the words perfectly, I do not believe you have correctly captured the meaning of this idomatic phrase.

This is an American variant of of the English expression with the same meaning "I could not care less". Look at this article for a ...

Re: Dual Citizenship?

Dual citizenship was not permitted until 1992.

mler, What do you mean by this? Which nation do you think would have prevented Dann's father from holding dual British and Italian citizenship?

Unless Dann's grandfather had renounced his Italian citizenship before Dann's father was born, Dann's ...

Re: Help requested with translation

"Small car" is the literal translation of "piccola vettura". However, when an Italian says small car, they mean SMALL car, that is smaller than the smallest that most rental companies hire out.

Also, to make matters worse for most American visitors, rental companies generally only supply their ...

Re: Dual Citizenship?

Dann,

Here is a link to the Italian Consulate General in London with address and phone number.

Before you phone them, as Ricardo has said, you need to establish if your gradfather ever did renounce his Italian citizenship, and if he did whether he did it before or after you father was born.

From ...

A thought at Christmas time

I was looking through my late grandmothers photo collection a while back, and in amongst the postcards and pictures of us my mother had sent back home I found this prayer card.

The large text translates as "Souvenir of the celebration ...

The rules are quite complicated, see Community arrangements for customs relief

The way I read it, section 3, 8th bullet point applies. "small consignments of a non-commercial nature sent by private persons in third countries to private persons in the Community. The Regulation sets specific ...

Try out this site:

ww3.atlanteitaliano.it/atlante/default2.htm

The maps are fairly average, not as good as the other sites mentioned by other posters. However, you can swap the map view for an aerial photo view. The quality around Panni / Bovino / Deliceto is about as good as Google Earth gives ...

Re: Italian names and gender

Sorry Donna, but I feel I have to pull you up on this one: "Names that end in o are male. Names that end in a are female."

95% of the time you are quite right, but there are a number of common exceptions like Nicola and Andrea which are both masculine names.

Another exception is the name Maria ...

Re: Understanding what is meant in English

It looks to me like he did the same as you. He wrote in Italian, and translated it into English using an online translator. It's the opening phrase that gives it away.

"Hai ragione" translates literally as "You have reason", but the correct translation in this context would be "You're right ...

Re: Sailors Tattoos

Yvonne,

Firstly let me make it clear that this is just intelligent guesswork, possibly just guesswork.

Neither Loumak nor Psarro are Italian words.

In the case of Psarro, it is the Ps at the start. This looks like a transliteration of the Greek letter psi Ψ. At the risk of sounding like the ...

What hp program?

When you say "without losing the size", do you mean it does not fill a full sheet of normal paper, or that you want to split it over a number of sheets and stick them together to make it full original size?
