And here is how it would appear in color (I think):

The one in colour shows an officer while the one you posted originally was a soldier with no degrees. Also the collar badge - that shows the military corps one belongs - is different.

Thanks Livio- I wanted to post these other pics in the event that there were other folks here like me who had never even seen one of the uniforms before. Wow, seeing it in color is alot different from the family photo I posted initially!

It's hard to tell what Division and Regiment he was in from the pic. There should be tabs on the shoulders with the Division, but it's pretty blurred there.

If he enlisted locally, he would be in the 55th Savona. This Division was composed of the 15th and 16th Infantry Regiments and 12th Artillery (which became the 38th Artillery Regiment in WWII).

If it comes through, an image of the standard early WWI uniform should appear below:

Good luck.

Thanks syl, the one you posted looks more correct, as you can see on the collar that the darker piece is only at the front of the collar, and does not follow around to the back. Looking at my relative's pic, I'm now seeing that same trend on his right side of the collar. Not to mention I wasn't seeing any stitching for pockets on my relative's pic, and the uniform you gave an example also does not have pockets.

Thanks for the pic and info!

vintagegamer,

A little more info to narrow it down. The Jacket style looks closer to the M1909 adopted in December 1908 for infantry and artillery (but not cavalry). Though not as distinct as I'd like for certainty, the shoulders seem to have the distinctive rolls unique to the early versions of the M1909 designed to keep shoulder straps from slipping off. This was discontinued late in the war in many jackets (including the one pictured above).

The tapering collar colors (with the star) came in a variety of colors. Yours seem to be black or dark blue with lighter piping. Red piping is most common for those base colors. Regular infantry most likely.

The biggest clue is the color (in this case tone) of the jacket itself. Grigio-verde (grey-green) was adopted with the M1909. Prior to this, the color scheme was dark blue (model M1903 and before).

Good luck and good hunting.
