Italian Army

The formal requested document is Registro dei foglie matricolari which includes the details of military service including such items as promotions but you might also wish to consider requesting discharge records "Foglio di Congedo Illimitato" which have all the conscription records, dpob of draft, length of service, transfers, campaigns, medals and wounds as it were. A comparable record is the Registro di Ruolo which also contain details of the man's military service.

I hardly think e-mail requests and form letters have to be followed obsequiously in their preparation to the provincial military district. You can improvise if so inclined. =Peter=

I've heard that Archivo Storico could be a source for finding out the Comune your ancester was born. But it seems they have gone through some changes.... does any body know if they accept requests with only the Provincia name and year o birth ( or the year he was 17 ) ?

Since all documents are in the town of origin there should be duplicates in the provincial archives but as to whether they are able to locate said duplicates without knowing the town of origin is problematical. The Provincial military archives require town of origin but that may also be problematical.....give it a try and see what happens. You never know! =Peter=
