Italy census started in 1871 and for each decade up to 1901 were iinconsistent and limited in the amount of information they gathered. Starting in 1911 the census taking reformed with consistent and replete information. Copies o f each comune's census is in the Uffico Anagafe (census office) but as to whether they all release the results of census is spotty since privacy issues intercede in some comune's. =Peter=

Hi Peter,

Thanks for all of the information and prompt responses. This may be a little off topic, but do you know of a way to find US Naturalization documents of relatives?

Additionally, when requesting documents from the towns should the letters be drafted in the masculine or feminine?

It is not necessary to review letters written in Italian obtained from the form lletters appearing in any one of the websites mentioned in this forum. I prefer www.mangeruca.com and the gender is in keeping with good italian grammar (or else they would not likely appear inthe website!).=Peter=

I am looking for the final Naturalization documents or at least the dates for both of my Grandparents when they became US citizens. I am hopeful this is after my mothers birth.

Thanks again

We have a great team here at IG with access to paid databases.
Naturalization records may be found in one of these or
the family can be placed on census which may narrow down the time frame for naturalization.

By providing as much info on the family as you can researchers can look for these records.

Then again, you may just want to be pointed in the right direction and enjoy the thrill of the hunt!!

Let us know how to proceed......

I have some comments about Italian census'. In the area I live, the town's appear to keep a card file system of each person whi is registered as a resident. Periodically they do a 'census' which is more of an update to their records. A mailing is sent out and each person is asked to confirm their data with the anagrafe office. I have seen several of these cards from the early part of the 1900's and they are stamped for each time they did the 'census'. I have posted a sample on my website for those who want to see an example.
Other census' I have studied consisted of the anagrafe completing a folder for each family and then updating the folder for the next 10 years (1921, 1931 Sora. 1901 Pescosolido). I have been here since the year 2000 and so far have not seen any census similar to the English, US or Canadian census.
