Need help translating birth record please!!

Post by Dmlphoto5 »

I am normally decent at translating birth records, but this one is hard. I think something happened but I’m not sure what. Any chance someone out there can help? The scratched out in red is just the name of the person. Thank you again this one is so tough!!!

The declarant was the midwife who helped at birth. She declared the birth as the father was away from town.
The second word you scratched should be in the place of another in the record, where you find the symbol before the name (it seems to be to be "|1|", or something like that)

Does it say anything about the person being born on a ship?

You haven't posted the entire record, but there is nothing in the section you did post about a birth on a ship. The location where the birth took place would be in the other part of the record.

The birth took place in the house located in Caiazzo on via Portavetere. There currently is a Piazza Porta Vetere in the town, but I can't say it is the same. There is no number on the house. I can't say whether the house was the home of the midwife who assisted with the delivery, or the home of the parents. Normally the midwife went to the woman's home to assist with the delivery.

Interesting. Thank you I appreciate it. I wonder why the family thinks that the girl was born on the ship.

This is not the first case where info appearing in an Italian record proved that family oral history is incorrect. If the birth took place on a ship bound for the U.S., for example, the info would appear someone on the ship's manifest-either at the end of the manifest, or somewhere on one of the pages of the ship's manifest. Just know that the page where the ship's clerk recorded the info may have not been the same page where the family was listed on the passenger list. He recorded the info wherever he found room on the manifest to do so.

The other thing is-are you sure that you located the correct birth record, and that the child in the record didn't die and then another was born and given the same name? This was a common practice, as certain first names were important to families, particularly if it was the name of a grandparent, or even a close relative who had recently died, or was still living and with whom the father or mother had a very close relationship.
