Suggestions for finding relative who was a Catholic nun

Post by giannattasio »

My great grandfather's sister became a nun in Italy. Her ship manifest has her and 2 other nuns traveling together and arriving in New York in 1893. I would like to know what happened to her. I have no idea what convent she went to in the US. Any suggestions on where I can write to in the Catholic Church to make an inquiry?

Have you tried to trace her through census records first? Or through her manifest? I think it would be easier to try to find that info first, and then you can contact the correct diocese.

If you want to post the info you have, perhaps we can help. :D

Dear Giannattasio if you give us her family name as well as her nuns name and the name of the ship she arrived at NYC with or the date of arrival we can then pin point her destination thru the manifest so when you write to the Archdiocese of NY or whatever archdiocese of their destination fromthe ships manifest you will be writing to the right place....

Check out the archdiocese of NY at www.newadvent.org/cathen/11020a.htm for some information so you can see where we are going with this. =Peter=

Her destination on the manifest is New York. The nuns used their last names after Sister to idenitfy themselves on the manifest so I don't know what her Sister name became after she immigrated. I do have her Italian birth record. I've not had any luck finding her in the census records. The manifest only has name, age, town of origin and destination city, no specific address listed.
Thanks for the link, very helpful. I'm going to call the number they have listed and find out where to address my inquiry. Hopefully, they will have the records for the Sisters indexed by their birth names and dates.

What city were they destined to journey to since that city will be part of an archdiocese for which we have an address for you to make inquiries. =Peter=

Sorry for the delay. There is a gentlemen named Kevin Knight who can be reached by e-mail at "feedback732@newadvent.org" You might wish to ask him for the location of the archives listing the Nuns arriving in 1893. Ihad a website but it was not functioning properly. =Peter=

the nuns... they was ursulines, augustinans, camaldoleses or other?? also many italian nuns following Mother Cabrini in New York ( between 1889/1917 abt) for to aid Archibishop Corrigan opening a orphanage for to aid children and italian women.... and hospitals ( in the 17 oct 1892: the Columbus Hospital in New York) and schools... so maybe your nuns maybe worked in some hospital or orphanage or school, no necessarly in a convent...

The 3 nuns were from San Giuliano, Roma and Oppido Mamertina, they sailed to NY from Le Havre. Thanks all for the excellent input.
