GERMANOTTA is indeed an Italian surname but is not listed in the Italian surname dictionary signifying that it is either an imported surname and italianized or is local in origin based upon a nickname, work activity or some other anecdotal basis.
There are 17 cities, towns, or villages thruout the length and breadth of Italy with persons having the surname GERMANOTTA. Go to
www.gens.labol.net/en/cognomi and put the surname in upper left and click the arrown.

If you go to www.familysearch.org you can just type in Germanotta it is evident that the surname is historically concentrated in Messina Sicily but dating back to th 1816 at the earliest.

Perhaps if you go to www.genealogytoday.com you may wish to research the surname further. =Peter=
