Zabella Pellettieri - Laurenzana, Italy
I'm trying to get more information on Zabella. I assume that her actual name is Isabella. Unfortunately, I have some conflicting information about her. On the 1905 NYC census, she is living with Prospero & Carmela Pellettieri in Manhattan. She is listed as an aunt. However, on the 1910 census, she is then listed as mother.
This would be much simpler if not for the fact that Prospero's wife Carmela's maiden name was also Pellettieri, so I don't know who she is related to and how she is related. The record also indicates her arrival in 1893, but I cannot find any record of an Isabella or Zabella Pellettieri arriving between 1890-1895. Perhaps that is her middle name??

Chris
I see the following on castlegarden.org
PELLETTIERI ISABELLA 15 F 5 Apr 1897 U
PELLETTIERI MARIA-CARMELA 19 F 5 Apr 1897 U
PELLETTIERI PROSPERO 23 M 5 Apr 1897 U
Since I haven't found the census records to which you refer, I don't know the ages of the individuals in your ancestry. When I tried looking for the April 5, 1897 date, and the last name, on stevemorse.org, nothing is found.
Will have to go through the missing manifests, if these ages are correct.

Chris...
The Isabella on the manifest is much younger than the Zabella on the 1910 Census (DOB 1882 vs. 1853)...
Could we be seeing two different women?
For reference...1910Census

I also noticed you posted Isabella's birth record on Ancestry (DOB about 1881)...

Do you see the tiny x above the word mother on the 1910 census? Wonder what that means.

Yes, she was born in about 1853. She was 52 on 1905 census and 57 on 1910 census.
I did see the Isabella that died in Manhattan in 1919, but if she was 72, that age doesn't match with an 1853 year of birth. Still, it's probably the only lead I have right now!!!
Thanks.

Yes, I also saw the x above "mother". At first I thought it was denoting mother-in-law, but I already know the identity of Carmela's mother, so it must be Prospero's side. The question is, aunt or mother???

The X & et(?) also occur for Mariana Barbera near the top of the page. It appears that the only thing they may have in common is being widowed.
Perhaps it was something the enumerator was keeping track of like 'H' for head and 'wf'

Thanks, Valarie. I hadn't studied the rest of the census page, but you may very well be right about what the x meant.
