Stravinos in Messercola and Santa Maria a Vico, Caserta

Post by Poolgirl64 »

I'm working on family trees for myself and my good friends' family.

My friends' grandfather was born around 1912 and lived in Caserta, Italy. His name is Fiorentino Stravino. I understand that sometimes they are referred to by a "slang" name instead of their actual birth names. He was married to a Maria Carmela who was born 1910.

I am trying to obtain information on this family's roots and could use the help. The family is believed to live within the cities of Messercola and Santa Maria a Vico. I would love to find out more about his family but I am new to searching Italian records and if any one can help or have suggestions for me please let me know. It would be so great if I could find some of the records for my friends' family in Caserta.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hello and welcome :-)

There are currently 6 listings of the Stravino name in the Italian phone book for the comune of Santa Maria a Vico

You may wish to write to one or more and inquire of ancestors/relatives.

I am currently reviewing a film for Santa Maria Capua Vetere for births in the late 1860's. At the beginning of the film are a bunch of records from Santa Maria a Vico. I only noted that they were from the early 1900's because I had no interest in that town.

If you can provide me some specific info to research, I will see if it is on that film.

Thank you Tessa78 ... actually found those listings the other day.

Jim - afraid I don't have a lot to go on ... this side is "estranged" ... This is a tough one as not much to go on ... As mentioned in my earlier post Fiorentino was born about 1912 in what was believed to be Messercola, Maddaloni, Caserta. We just found out through an outside source that he just died last week in Santa Maria a Vico at the age of 98. (so would put his birth around 1912) ... He married Maria Carmela (assumed to be a couple of years older) and had 3 children - 2 girls and one boy Luigi. The latter born around 1957 or maybe earlier and lives in Santa Maria a Vico. I am told the family is from this region.
Sorry I don't have much more to go on ... this time I am really starting from scratch .. if could find marriage or birth record would be an asset to learning parents names etc ..
Any help you can provide I would be eternally grateful!!!

Jim,

Thank you so much for taking the time to search out the records. Had a hard time viewing some of them and could use help in the translation if you don't mind.

Just to note re: Maria Carmela .. should have clarified Carmela is her middle name not the surname ... at present we are not certain as to what her maiden name was.

I really appreciate all your help!!!

Cheers,

Robyn

Hi Robyn,

I will try to get to the translations later on today when time permits unless someone else does them first. :)

Jim,

Once again thank you for your help! It's nice to know there are people out there who are willing to help.

Although I am terrific at the English and Irish stuff, this is all new to me and I spent the other day taking an online course on how to read the Italian records .... Guess I need to brush up with Latin ..Ha!

Thank you so much for your help!

Cheers,
Robyn

Hi Robyn,

There is an excellent link on the Mormon site about reading Italian documents. However, I have the link on my laptop at home and can't remember it.
Someone may be kind enough to provide the link before I get home.
