Hi everyone - am new here, and glad to be here!
I'm looking for ancestors of my ggfather, Elijah Lazzarine, from northern Italy.
All I know of him is that he was born in 1866 and the story goes that he was a stowaway on a ship that sank, and his lifelong friend and he survived. I have no clue how true this might be! I'm told he had red hair and was light skinned.
I cannot find him in any immigration or ship records - anywhere. If anyone can point me in a direction in Italy where the Lazzarine (or Lazzarini) surname may be found (or where there were redheads!) I'd be grateful!

"Lazzarine" does not exist today in Italy, but the name spelled "Lazzarini" (with an i) is quite common on the northern regions...

Yes, my Eligah (nickname Lige) settled in Ohio and married Francis Smith. I also found the record you refer to when he applied for citizenship (in Lancaster, Ohio), in 1882. Have been communicating with that dept. in Ohio on attaining any further information on that record - nothing yet.

If I can narrow down the area where my Eligah was from, I hope to do the same. Maybe with time someone will post here that will give me that clue!!!

On the 1900 Census record Elijah lists his birth date as June 1865, Italy.
Frances was born in Ohio.

The DC is listed for "Elish Lazzanine" and death was 1920 (age 55 yrs, 7 mos, 2 days - birthdate of June 11, 1864). Unfortunately, there is no specific location noted for his birth other than Italy. You will also find errors on the DC (this is very common since the informant is usually a child/spouse who doesn't really know the facts). For instance, mother is listed as Frances Smith...
