Lucio

Post by sumner »

This is a bit of a fishing expedition, but I am looking to see what is known about the surname LUCIO.

My wife's family is of Hispanic heritage here in Texas. Her mother's maiden name was Lucio. Some researchers in South Texas & Northern Mexico state they trace their Lucio roots to Italian merceneries who came to Mexico in the Mid-19th Century. My wife finds it rather amusing that she might have Italian roots just like me. I have yet to trace back her Lucio line that far as of yet. But I thought I'd see where I was heading in this search.

Lucio is not a common name in Mexico or South Texas. So there is a high likelhood that all are directly related to one or perhaps just a handful of Lucios.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Well, a quick search of the Italian phone book http://elenco.libero.it/elencotel/publi ... onimie.jsp shows that Lucio is not very common in Italy today.

Given that, it is relatively widely dispersed with concentrations in Turin, Venice, and Naples. The speculator in me tells me that this family is or was particularly prone to travel or relocation. Perhaps there were merchants, soldiers, or mercenaries in the history. Unfortunately, it looks like you will have to plow through Mexico to link them to a specific town in Italy.

Good luck.

Sumner,

My great grandmother was a Lucio. We trace her line back to a man named either Devito or Benito Lucio from Italy born about 1750. He married Francisca Loya in Cruillas, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
