New York City Birth Certificate for deceased father

Post by Wsull99 »

Hi

I'm trying to find out a way to get a NYC birth certificate for my deceased father and mother. My Father was born in 1915 in brooklyn or queens and my mother in brooklyn in 1917. I am there oldest child. I requested a birht certificate from the NYC Department of health and they replied that I was not eligible to receive their birth certificate. The only eligible people that could request the certificates are their parent and them. Can anyone recommend a way I can obtain these certificates.

Thank You

You can get the BC by sending the form (go to the dept's website under applying by mail) along with their DC (they will return the DC) and a copy of your ID or you can do this in person.

you might need to contact the NY Dept of Municipal Archives.

They tend to have everything by microfilm but they'll look up birth/death certificates prior to 1920 if you give them as much info as possible. They charge extra per-borough that they need to search, so if you know the relative is from Brooklyn, you're a step ahead! Just remember that the Bronx was considered part of the borough of Manhattan in 1917.

Search first to see if they have the relative you're looking for.

This is to obtain a NYC birth certificate:

The municipal archives has BC from prior to 1910 so you will have to apply at the Dept of health.

I am in NYC and if a third party is able to pick up the Birth Certificates in person (only, probably, with a notarized affidavit from you to do so), I would be happy to help. I know that my nephew just recently was able to obtain his father's birth certificate showing proof that he was his father's son.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

oops only a child can receive birth and death certificates, you must have a letter stating with your name from a notary that you are the decendent of that person. they do this so no one gets that persons social security number. you can send a check with 25.00 to them this is what the going rate is for them in worth street in brooklyn ny on birth and death.
Tell them you need it for INHERITANCE PURPOSES NOT FOR GENEALOGY. they not give it to you for this. just so you can have what is rightfully yours.

You can order a lot of records from here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vi ... home.shtml

I've managed to get a couple copies of death certificates but I think they have to have been before a certain date. Otherwise there are more directions on how to get them. I've also found that this is the cheapest website for ordering them. Good luck!

On the subject of getting vital records. I am waiting on grandmother's death certificate from NYC Dept. Of Health. I live out of state, and I ordered via a mail application almost two months ago. Still waiting on the death certificate. Does anyone know how long it takes by mail? It was sent to the 125 Worth St.-Vital records office since death was after 1949. Thought I have it by now. Seems still pending since my personal check which I submitted with the application did not clear. Tried calling, but all I get is a recorded message. :?:

Thanks to all who wrote concerned about the delay I was having in getting the vital record. I am happy to say that my grandmother's death certificate arrived last week. On the document were the names of my great-grandparents which I never knew.
