What is a cavalier?

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

What is a cavalier?

I wanted to know if anyone could give me more information on what it meant to be a Cavalier (knight) in 1800 Italy?

Thank you!

"Cavaliere" is the first degree of an order of knighthood, of which there were a few in 1800 Italy.

Please note that before the unification of Italy (1861) every Italian State had its own order of knighthood, by way of which the sovereign (or the "Doge" of the Republic, for Genoa and Venice) rewarded those citizens who distinguished themselves or rendered valuable services to the State.

For a complete list of the old Italian orders, please visit this Wikipedia page
